been reading these forums frequently lately to configure my 7290. saw this on ebay and went for it... a risk, definately but could turn into a really good deal. i cant wait to start messing around with it. those with experience, please tell me what you think... oops, guess i cant post links yet anyway... its an 8700g for $86.00. description:

"Hello, this auction is for a RIM Blackberry for TMobile service. I bought this device from my employer, but now I quit there, and it does not work anymore. It is locked and everytime I enter my password it does not recognize it. Other than that, it is in great, new condition. Regardless, I just got my service and sim card transferred over to a new MDA from TMobile, and that is working great for me. The Blackberry, comes with the holster and the battery, which keeps great charge, as if was new out of the box. It also comes with the cable that connects to the PC and a power cable. If you can get this device to work or even if you just repair Blackberrys, and use it for parts, this would be a great buy. Please ask any questions before bidding. Thank you and good luck !!!"

anybody think i got a deal or did i get screw myself over?

Just remember that you get what you pay for. It could be a stolen device and if so you are probably SOL. The story sounds fishy to me.

Here is what you need to do to get it working. Remove all the old IT policies. Do a search and you can get the instructions on how to do it. Wipe it as well.

Get a BB dataplan from your carrier. You will need the IMEI and PIM to give to the CSR.

Set up your BIS account for email. T-Mo should provide instructions, otherwise do a search on here.

If you can't set up BIS, make sure the seller has deleted their BIS account and released the IMEI and PIN.

Download Desktop Manager and set up to synch with one of the PIMs (Outlook is what most people use).

Download the user guide from the CD or from the RIM website.

Download Stinsondog's tips from the forum.

thanks for the advice. i did email the seller about the bis to make sure she deactivates on her end. i have a copy of the desktop soft i think 3.9 or 4.0. is there a version best for the 8700? if the device turns out to be stolen (fingers crossed) would it be blacklisted or would tmo refuse to activate it?

thanks,
nate

Version 4.1 is what is distributed, 4.2 is on the RIM site. Your choice.

If it was reported as lost or stolen, tmo should have it listed as such. I hope it isn't.

Thumbs up

Just an update:

The Blackberry arrived on Monday in almost perfect condition. Thanks for the help Dubdub. I followed your advice and everything went flawlessly. I only had one major problem which ended up being on the T-mobile end (provisioning t-zones). Anyway, customer service was great and the 8700g has surpassed my expectations. I wonder if I am in the running for the lowest price paid for a lightly used 8700g ($86.00). Now if I could only get bbweather to work...

Nate, BBWeather can be frustrating to setup, but wonderful once working.

1- Load the software
2- In BBWeather, click to open Options, place checkmark at "Disable MDS Proxy"
3-Click to Add location. Enter the Zip Code in the first Location ID, and then in Description, type your identification of the city, click OK.
4. Save and Close BB Weather.
5. BB Main Screen, goto Options > Advanced > TCP. Enter you carrier APN ( which for Tmobile will be:
APN: wap.voicestream.com
Username: (leave blank)
Password: (leave blank)

Save and return to Main Screen. Pull the battery on your BB and reboot.

Should work. Good luck.

It's tricky to tell with the quoted text. The BB could have been "found" or the seller could just not know much about BB's...
