Default 8700g Reception Problem

Please Login to Remove!

Hi everyone,

I unlocked a T-Mobile 8700g and am currently using my Cingular SIM card in it. When I first turn on the phone, the BB will pick up GSM then switch to EDGE. Then after about 5 - 10 seconds the EDGE will disappear and there will be nothing displayed.

When the EDGE or GSM is displayed I am able to make and receive phone calls. However, once they are gone, all calls fail. The funny thing is that the reception bars are still full even when the EDGE disappears. When I don't move and switch the SIM card into a secondary phone, I really do have full reception and can make all calls fine.

Under the area where the EDGE/GSM is displayed, the phone currently displays "Cingular". Before, it would say "Unable to connect to browser." However, when this was displayed all calls functioned properly.

Lastly, when the EDGE or GSM shows up, when I go to the Network under Options, it'll say Network: Cingular. Right when the EDGE or GSM disappears, it changes to Network: *none*. Yet, the reception is still reading full and saying Cingular on the front screen. I called in Cingular and they said the registration and SIM card were fine.

What could be blocking the phone from picking up EDGE or GSM??? This problem is annoying, seeing how the actual reception is fine... \

Have you tried a manual search and selection?

When it says Network: *none* I can't even get an automatic or manual search to commence. The only options I'm limited to are select and there's nothing to select. When it says Network: Cingular when the EDGE/GSM is showing, I can do a manual search though.

Okay... so about 20 minutes ago, the phone returned to a stage where it works. Suddenly where it displays "Cingular" on the homescreen between where it reads edge and the first row of icons, it started to say "Seareching for network." Then it read "Data connection refused." When it reads this the edge stays displayed all the time.

What's stranger is that when I go to options and Network it says "Network: Cingular". Yet when "Cingular," not "Searching for network" is displayed on the homescreen, the options/Network reads "Network: *none*"

I'm so confused. Could this be because I'm using an unlocked T-Mobile phone with Cingular service???

It's possible but that shouldn't matter. It could be the device itself or the SIM. Have you tried swapping one and/or the other to test?

i have a 8800 which starting doing the same thing this afternoon.
The only thing I did was call cingular for help on daylight saving time display issue.
They confirmed the phone i currently use, the blackberry, and said they
had me listed for a treo 750.
They changed their records and then this is when my problem begin.
I am using the same sim card i used in the 750. I purchased the 8800 without a contract and therefore the cingular store had not registered the BB..
Will call the cingular serice tech tomorrow and see if this could be the problem, of now needing a new sims card.
