I've never really been sure what a firewall is (sorry this is such a newbie question), but what will it do for my blackberry? And is it recommended to turn it on? Can it possibly block some applications I'm using?

Firewall is a security feature. I have always had it on and never experienced any problems. Sorry I don't have a more thorough answer someone will come along who does!

Heck, never thought BB had a firewall..out of curiosity - do they catch viruses?

Most firewalls don't prevent viruses unless they have additional software on them. Today's firewalls don't block traffic at the application layer, which is where email travels and enters networks.

And a firewall is not a virus catcher.....it only allows and/or restricts inbound and outbound connections.

Wikipedia does not have an article with this exact title. What I got opening the link.
My two cents: firewall also keeps all the network connections in BB memory. If you got an error connecting to a site you need to reset the firewall and restart the device to get there

Dan, try this link then... (I believe a character was left off the earlier link post). However, if you had clicked on the first link available at the "wrong" wiki link you would have gotten...
