Default Old AT&T SIM in 8800/8100, no go?

Please Login to Remove!

Just read that an old AT&T SIM will not work in the 8800 or the 8100, is that true? Even if the device is unlocked?

My wife uses an 8700 but I want to give her either my 8100 or 8800 when the 8300 is finally available on Cingular (I have a Cingular SIM) - but sounds like that's not going to work.

Any help in confirming would be helpful and thanks in advance.

Why not, when you get your 8300, you call Cingular and have her account transferred to the SIM that comes with it? It will be a 3G SIM.

Default Blue bad - Orange good

That is true - we have some of the old "blue" SIMs and they all have to be swapped to "orange" SIMs before upgrading to either 8100 or 8800.

Blue SIMs are dead. You can only use them in old AT&T devices. You need an orange SIM for anything that is newer.

Yeah. We've had to do that with about a dozen devices when upgrading from 8700c's to 8800g's. Easiest way to spot the old SIM's are they're blank (no logos) with yellow/brown lettering, or they have the A&T Wireless logo on them.

It's a pain if they don't have an equivalent "orange" plan, but overall it went fairly smoothly. Biggest thing for us was to reiterate a couple of times that they should be on the BES plan, not the BIS plan. I think the default is BIS in their system or something. Obviously if you don't connect to a BES, you should be set.

Does the 8800 require a 3G sim? I had a user go from a 7290 to an 8800 and the 8800 keeps dropping calls. Cingular support said the SIM was the problem, but I haven't heard of a SIM card causing dropped calls before. I would think it is the device antenna.

i read in here somewhere that it (older Sim Card) was causing a delay in the voices so I asked them to give me a cingular 3G (blue/orange) card and they did, have not had any problems, actually never did but wanted to get it just in case.

You could also just take the simm into a cingular store and tell them you are having problems with it, and they will just give you a replacement. Just tell them the device says invalid simm once in a while and you think it is going bad. When I had the Moto Razr I had that problem with a cingular simm I just took the simm into a store and they gave me another one.
