| Uncaught Exception: java.lang.ClassCastException Please Login to Remove! Uncaught Exception: java.lang.ClassCastException
Everything was working on 8800 including BlackBerry Messenger. I next install Yahoo Messenger. After reboot Ithe Uncaught Exception appears.
I used Desktop Manager and removed Yahoo Messenger. Still have the problem. Removed BlackBerry Messenger and then added it back in. The error is still there.
How do you fix this WITHOUT wiping the device? I tried everything yesterday to fix this problem and ended up having to start fresh which required reactivation to the BES. I slowly added back in third part applications and found Yahoo Messenger created the problem. Now I would at least like to get BlackBerry Messenger back to working without having to start fresh. | | Offline

| Same Issues- Similiar Message Help me here anyone!
Here's the error message: Uncaught exception: java.lang.IllegalStateException
When I wipe the device it's fine for a day or so then it crashes then I lose the the browser. I click on Icon and nothing happens.
It also does it on telenav GPS icon. Here's that error code: Uncaught exception:net.rim.device.api.system.ControlledAcce ssException
Getting very frustrated, as I cant use my BB's browser and Nav.
Thanks in advance | | Offline

| Well we know that "Whipe HH" doesn't fully whipe it of applications (core).
I'd suggest ...
1) selective backup of importants (contacts, mail db, BB bookmarks, the usual). But NO icon arrangement!
2) whipe HH.
3) BBDM do a full sync.
4) reinstall your applications from source not from backup. Pull out battery then back in.
Voila this should help, I hope.

| What I found I had the same message as the original poster on my Cingular 8800. In my case, it occurred when using the Bluetooth handsfree built into my Audi. Found a thread that said it can be caused by adding groups in Address Book. I had just entered a group prior to this happening. One thread said to delete the group. I did this and it did not cure it. I then read that one person had cleared the Contact database, resynced, and cured the problem. I did this and it worked. I will not add a group until this is fixed. | | Offline

| I get this same error with rogers os. I can duplicate it (if you are using google talk).
If you sign out (or are signed out) of gtalk with an open conversation, you will get the java error. If you end the convo before signing out, you are fine.
This may be the case with other IM clients as well...... | | Offline

| my 8800 runs suuuuuper slowly now. After i hung up a phone call with a person not in a group (but I did make 2 groups this morning) the phone's keys stopped functioning other than the top mute/power key, alt, num, and caps. so it seemed like the 8800 was doing something. pop out the battery and now the phone runs super slowly and I get the same error.

| Thanks a Lot Dear Thanks a lot providing such a tricky but functioning solution.
Quote
SOLUTION: Connect the USB phone cable to your computer. Start BlackBerry Desktop Manager (it should say disconnected because you haven't connected the phone yet). Reboot the BlackBerry (either remove and reinsert the battery, or press Alt-Shift-Del). Once the 8800 starts rebooting, plug the USB cable into the 8800. The screen will start showing that it’s testing security software (which is where it locks up with the java error upon completion). Before it gets to that lock up stage, though, you will notice that the desktop manager says you are connected. AS SOON AS YOU ARE CONNECTED to the 8800, open “Backup and Restore”, then “Advanced”, it will take a minute or so to show the databases on the right with the number of records in each one. Once it is done, highlight “Address Book” with one mouse click, and then click “Clear” and then “Okay” on the confirmation dialog box. It will take it a minute, but it will erase all of your address book entries – including the group entry/entries that caused this problem. Once it is done, remove the USB cable and reboot the 8800 (see above). And there ya go, your 8800 works once again. Now just sync your Outlook contacts again and don’t add any groups!!! At least until there is a patch, someday.

| Does this pop up after entering password if there is a one in place? If on the BES, assign blank policy and reboot and see if that occurs again. I had simular issue but only with 8830 and when policy item Allow Third Party Apps to Use Persistent Store is set False. | | Offline

| I was told the 88xx series has a problem with groups in the address book. I had uncaught exceptions for java that froze my 8800. Locked it up solid, not even a battery pull would clear it. I wiped and re-installed, then immediatley deleted all groups from my address book. No more problems. | | Offline

| To <cmasccs>:
Thank you so much for posting the "tricky but functioning solution"! It really helped solved my problem. Two things to add:
1) you get just plug in the USB cable to your device before pulling out the battery to reset it
2) the problem with the address book is actually "group" (as I read on another post). So the problem should dispear by simply not having any group entry.
Here's the description of my problem, in case anyone else encountered it:
I've been at my BB for 4 hours trying to fix the problem, and my problem was even more serious than any of you guys had. So after I pull out the battery to reset it, the hourglass keeps on flashing at the login screen. If I don't do anything, the device will eventually reset itself after 10 minutes, and repeat the same hourglass problem.
So, I tried to type in the password, but the first letter I pressed took > 1 minute to actually appear on the screen. Finally after 2 hours, I could finally login by entering the password letters all at once and be patient enough to wait (like 10-20 min) for it to finally login.
Then after login, I had the jave exception message as in this thread's title. At first I thought it was because insuffient memory as my memory has only a few KBs left. I discovered the trick you described myself before realizing it. I went to application loader to delete all my extra apps (Google map, etc.) for free memory. But it still didn't work.
So finally I found your post, deleted the address book, and ALAS, my problem was solved! | | Offline

| Same Problem, just a little different My BB 8800 has just stopped right when i turn it on and i cant do anything other then click the OK button which, only the first time, makes it verify the security software....other than that, i cant access the phones apps or anything because it just says Uncaught Exception: java.lang.ClassCastException...
