PIN messages equal data, you can not send/receive data while on a phone call. This is a hardware issue so there is not necessarily an update for this item (i.e. software or OS update). However should RIM develop a BB that is 3G capable then you would be able to use data and phone at the same time (i.e. PIN, use the internet, receive emails, etc all while on a phone call).

I don't think the simultaneous voice/data capability is a 3G issue. I think it is a capability of GSM. I may be wrong but for example, Cinguar's network has the ability to send voice and data at the same time, hence their new video share service whereas Verizon's current network does not have this capability.

I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

I have been wrong before however data (whether PIN, Internet, email, etc.) is not possible on a BB while on a phone call.

However here are great summaries on 3G vs. GSM from Wikipedia (note the first paragraph on the 3G link):

3G - 3G - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
GSM - Global System for Mobile Communications - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I kinda stand corrected.
Is 3G in the GSM family?

Um, no. It's a limitation of GPRS/EDGE -- not software. As has already been stated, if you want simultaneous voice and data you'll need 3G which isn't currently an option on any BB.

Surely you also know that SMS is billed entirely separately from your data and that non-data devices can send and receive SMS? SMS is not data.
