If one does NOT sign up for the $10/month GPS service, is there still GPS functionality on the 8800 that can be used?

For examplle will the unit detect where you are, and display it on a BlackBerry map?? ... or must you subscribe to the $10/month service for that?

There is no $10/mnth service in Canada as Telenav does not cover Canada. The Rogers 8800 comes with BBMap and the GPS, which is free.

yes telenav works fine in Montreal i use it since yesterday and it is a nice application

But the service is definitely in Canada...and there is definitely a $10/mo service charge.

GPS on 8800 on Rogers works fine using BB Maps as long as you have an internet plan or a BB Plan, requiring a Data plan has nothing to do with GPS, its because the actual maps are not saved on the device, they are downloaded on the fly.

Technically, if you don't have any Data Plan, you can still start GPS and see the arrow on the screen but the map underneath will not be displayed.
You do not need TeleNav, etc. Those things provide extra services like "turn by turn navigation" etc.

(on Rogers some applications like the BB Maps will work even if you have a regular internet plan not the BB Plan)

Does anyone know the data consumption when you use the GPS? if we use 5 hours a month, how many MB data it would use? just to get an idea. I have 1/2mb data plan if i use approx. 5 hours a month would i be exceeding?

For 30 mins while driving, I used about 250kb, so I think you will go over 500kb in 5 hrs.

So where do you get it for Canada?

The link to Rogers is for the GPS receiver, and telenav.com does not have Rogers listed in the list of carriers.

I am a Rogers Wireless subscriber and I downloaded Telenav via the wap browswer. Once you open the wap browser check the applications option and it should be there. Recently I noticed Rogers pushed an icon to my BlackBerry that reads "Do More" you can also download the Telenav app from there also.

You can use any GPS app that runs on the 8800. You don't have to use Telenav or whatever your carrier offers.

LMAO. Sorry thats just funny. Then you should issue an exception for your unit or create a NEW GROUP and put specific IT Policy for that group only. Then move yourself to that group, RE-ASSIGN that new it policy after issuing your unit the blank policy. Don't forgot host routing table to resetup on network for provisioning WAP browser. Hope this helps and not insults your intelligence or experience; i'm just learning the BES myself.

So did anyone answer the question about GPS working solo as far as compass and free mapping software? Or is it enabled when part of a pay per use service???

Free software is limited if not currently available to work in Canada - InfoSpace Find IT! is one that only works in USA. I very few ppl get some lbs from that app to work but I highly doubt them.

YES the GPS will work out of the box. It'll work with Blackberry Maps - if its not on your 8800 then goto Blackberry site to download it even OTA, from the home page bookmark in Browser. maps needed.
