I have not upgraded my OS for over a year, but now want to install the new 4.2 software on my 8700c (I use a BES). I have a few of questions:

(1) Can someone confirm that these instructions work for 4.2?
(2) Is there some .alx file needed and where can I get it? Is it in this thread?
(3) What is the most efficient way to do the upgrade, which will require the least amount of reinstallation and configuration of third party programs, such as Cryptmagic, Pocketday, Googletalk, Googlemaps, Beyond 411, all bookmarks, etc.)?

- Download and install Desktop Manager v4.2, Service Pack 1 from the RIM web site
- Download and install the latest OS for your device
- Locate and delete VENDOR.XML from your PC C: drive
- Restart Desktop Manager

If an application does not back up data - like BBWeather - then you will have to add the data back in. All other applications and data should work fine.

You do not need to modify or add any ALX files.

he stated he wanted 4.2 for 8700c my understanding is that it hasn't been released? maybe he has access to beta 4.2?

I would make sure you discuss this with your BES Admin first to make sure IT policies will allow it and to make sure your current BES set up will allow it. If the company owns the device, even more reason to speak with him/her about it.
