Default New 8703e (Verizon) member with a few questions...

Please Login to Remove!

First, thanks for looking. Verizon sent me an 8703e after my 5th 700p within 3 weeks went in for service. They couldn't fix a known issue with the device and it freezing during SMS messages, something cruicial for me.

Anyway, I've spoken to VZW techs in length about features and I've come to realize they know next to nothing about BBs because they didn't know you could move or hide home screen icons, something I thought was rediculous and thankfully I searched long enough to find it. I'm just going to list some questions, if anyone knows the answer, please let me know. (I've done some searching but couldn't find these specific answers).

1. My battery has a white bar with red (pink) X's on them. I was told by one support rep that it has been in contact with water, yet another one told me that if it had the whole thing would be red or pink, not just X's. Can someone confirm this either way?

2. On my treo I had a program that would auto capitalize things if I held the button, similar to the BB, however it also had something where if I double tapped the letter it would do the ALT automatically. Is there something like that for BB? I'm having a hard time adjusting to the (M/.) as the period was a dedicated key on the Treo.

3. I know how to Alt Tab and these are whats always open even if I try to close them: Home, Browser, Phone, BB Msngr, Messages.
Is that normal?

4. I know in the messages app I can sort out just the SMS by ALT+S. Is there a way I can have this done permanently (or it least until I say otherwise)? I have a seperate inbox for all my email accounts, I dont need to see them jumbled up with my SMS.

5. I have backlight set to 100, 2min, and the auto backlight disabled. When I turn the unit on it's at a certain backlight. When I touch the on button again it gets brighter, a third time will turn the unit off. How can I make it just go on (and as bright as possible) and off? I don't need the lower brightness, that's why I asked for 100 and I don't need to hit that on/off button 3 times to shut it.

Those are the major quirks, I thank you again for reading the whole thing and answering as much as possible. I am totally in love with this device.

Erik

I'm mobile on the wap site, I'll try to rememeber your questions...
1. Can't confirm, I know it will be red with water or moisture contact, I can't cofirm the red XXs.
2. To uppercase a letter, hold down the key for a second, rather than tap it. To get a period automatically, double space after a character.
3. Yes
4. I believe there is a theme, zen or dimension that will separate your SMS box, search on the board here for for one of those themes and the word folder or separate.
5. I don't believe you cannot disable the autodim feature. It adjusts to your light level. Try to search on autodim to confirm.

Thanks for the reply.

#2 is solved, OMG I was dying for something like that. Double space works perfectly!

#3 is solved, thank you.

I will look for #4, if someone can still let me know about the battery (#1), and #5 I did set 'autodim' to off already.

Thanks,
Erik

most of your answers come from reading this site, tips and tricks take time to play and learn with... its a fun device.

as for tech support, they are not trained to teach you the tips and tricks, just for making the device/network integration work and the device itself to be operational. its up to you to play and experiement

I have the same model with Verizon. My battery has the same sticker on the end. I do not think that is a water sensor. If you take the battery cover off there is a little white square close to the bottom of the BB. That is the water sensor. It has not turned red on mine yet, but there are red Xs on a sticker on the end of the battery. Since the white square is closer to the out side, and I have never heard of the water sensors just creating an X I would say it is a good bet those X's are not the water sensor.

I have seen several posts taking about the dimmer setting problem being fixed in the 8700 (GSM Version) with the latest 4.1 upgrade. Sadly there seems to be a 4 - 12 month delay in getting software updates for CDMA phones.

I dont know of any thing you can change to effect the screen dimming option. I get the same thing on mine.

I would never go back to palm again. Even though the palm was a much better pda, the bb is stable and that's all I really need.

It's like this with all carriers. As phinger23 said, they're not really trained to assist you with these sorts of things. It's precisely why sites like Blackberry Forums are so useful and important.

Back to the battery sticker. Mine has the exact same thing. I have experience with this on another phone in the past. If they X's are there, you are fine. They are red and the background is slightly red. If the entire sticker turns red and the X's disappear, that's a sign of water damage. Otherwise it's fine..

Hope this helps.
