I can tether the 7130e up to the lappy but it does not receive data. I do not know the APN for Alltel so I am just leaving the advanced modem string blank at this point and dialing #777 and it connects yet DNS is not working. Seems I can send data but not receive it. What else do I need to do? Do I need the advanced string in the modem? Any help appreciated please.

Do you have the tethering feature added onto your account? That might be whats causing it if Alltel finally figured out how to restrict it...i know as of about a week ago that wasn't the case...

No I do not have it on my account at this time. Do you need the modem string, and what is Alltel's APN? I leave this blank and it connects up but cannot receive data. I get assigned DNS servers and an ip but cannot ping anything on the outside. If I have to add it thats fine, but when calling Alltel one rep said I need to add it to the plan and another one said you cannot tether with any phone right now through Alltel. So if someone has the tethering working with Alltel right now please share how it works as mine is not working.

dont know if any of this helps you out, but its all i got....at least at nextel they still have no need for additional plans or adjustments on the bb account.

TAP Troubleshooting - Common Problems and their Solutions

Problem: Calling modem thinks it has reached a fax machine.
Solution: Deactivate FAX capabilities of modem and retry.

Problem: Messages being rejected.
Solution: Correct settings or adjust software to send no more than 140 characters.

Problem: Software dials out but can not establish a connection.
Solution: Check and correct dialing string.

Other tips: Confirm that the phone number is 10 digits long, with no leading 0 or 1.

i'll get back to you on the tethering on the 7130e...i just got one today on a warranty replacement of my 7250...and i'll try it tonight when i get home from work and post results..

With sprint and verizon, the ppp connection is just dial #777 with no user name or password.

The easiest thing to do is just download any tethering software that the carrier has (if they have it)

I have never seen any thethering software with Alltel.
I have tried some solutions in the past, and never could get it to tether.
Dont really want to pay more for this option.

I agree with you there, they already get you for enough on the smartphone plans...it kind of sucks...I've gotten tethering to work fine on my Palm Treo 650, but my bluetooth adapter i have doesn't recognize the dialup option on my BB 7130...kinda sucks...so i'll have to dig into it more i think

Update: I did manage to finally get my modem connection working...I was also unable to browse...I'm going to try some different DNS servers in the config later. Will update once i've tested this to see if it solves the issue.

It is possible Alltel finally did figure out how to restrict it..

Verizon charges $15/month for BBC use or use of there connection software. WOndering if there is a 3rd party solution or way to do this without the Verizon charges. (PDANET for WIndows/Palm Devices). Already paying unlimited data charges/plan....
