| I was having the same problem. When you want to enter a space in a numeric field, click the trackwhell to bring up the menu and select "Enable Multitap". You will then see ABC in the upper right hand corner. While it is displayed, you can enter spaces. One note, the "Enable Multitap" is temporary. If you move to another numeric field, you will be back in 123 mode. The same process is true for adding parens and dashes, except when you Enable Multitap, you then hit Alt-SYM. You should see the "-" on the first screen of symbols, and "(" and the ")" on the second screen of symbols. You can quickly change symbols screens by pressing the ZX key.
With those 2 tips, you can enter numbers in the (999) 999-9999 format.
I hope I've explained it well enough. It works for me on my 7100g.
