Default How to determine if 7290 is unlocked

Please Login to Remove!

I just received a new 7290 that I bought on buy.com for $144. It was advertised as unlocked. Came in new box with everything looking new and unused. Seal broken on box, to unlock I presume. T-mobile tag on phone and T-mobile instruction booklet.
I know nothing about blackberrys, and very little about mobile phones in general.
I have no cell service here in USA. I only use mobile phone when I am traveling in Europe where I will be in about 2 weeks. I have used unlocked simple motorola before on my travels. GSM type phones with removable SIM chips are great for travel in Europe because you can just swap out SIM chips as you move from area to area.
I bought 7290 strictly so that I would have use of full keyboard for typing SMS and eliminate the multiple punches needed on the standard types of phones without full keyboards.

OK, so that is the background.

My first question is: How can I be assured that this 7290 I just received actually is unlocked? I can't just put a SIM chip in from T-mobile, Cingular, ATT, etc., because I have no such chip. Besides none have towers in my area anyway. I won't really have a valid SIM chip to try until I arrive in Europe. Which would be a little late to find out the 7290 is not unlocked.

Thanks for help.

Not sure if this will work without a SIM Card, but try this:

Go into Options / Advanced / SIM Card
Type MEPD

A whole list should show up with every item reading Disabled

Thanks for try NJB. However,

1. In the options menu, there is no such sub-option called 'Advanced.'

2. In any of the options menues I open, there is no ability to type anything anywhere such as your suggested 'MEPD.'

So others have suggestions re my original question.

Also, the manual that came with T-Mobile name on it is totally worthless. I did not learn how to do a single thing from this manual. Everything I have learned so far is by pushing various keys and buttons and viewing what happens.

Is there a better manual available, or does RIM actually publish these worthless manuals and the various providers just put their names on the same manual?
