Default BBMaps, 8800 and AT&T - oh my

Please Login to Remove!

so why is there a disclaimer about AT&T (Cingular) customers cannot use BB Maps on their 8800? is it beacause they want us to use TeleNav at $10 a month? anyone using BB Maps on their 8800 with AT&T (Cingular) data plan?

Does the disclaimer say you "cannot use" or that they don't support it?

It is because they (AT&T/Cingular) don't offer technical support for it. Unless something has changed, you can use it.

Look in the GPS section of this forum. Short answer, yes, you can use BBMaps with the 8800 from AT&T but you need to make some minor modifications to files loaded on you Blackberry.

As for the software, you'll find plenty of comments; some from me, I didn't like the version I was using.

I downloaded BBmaps OTA on my Cingular/ At&T 8800. Works fine. I didn't need to mod anything. Is there some functionality that's missing that I am not aware of? Why the need for the mod?

No added functionality....When the 8800 came out, it did not have bbMaps, but I think AT&T got enough complaints so now it works fine without the hacks that the industrious people on this board came up with....

Yea no mods neccessary - it worked from the get-go! Yes thank you for all that help us with those mods! But honestly I don't like BB Maps - its slow and doesn't refresh quick enough . . .. I have to admit TeleNav works great!

I like Telenav also but what i can't get it to do is "find location" on a map. what i mean is I would like to be able to start an app that locates you with GPS and then displays a map of where you are. If you move, the map would follow you. BBMaps does that but I cannot figure out how to do that with TeleNav.

Same issue here. I love Telenav because of voice turn by turn directions but I dont think it just give you the map of current location and it also sets to turn off the screen until a new direction comes up. Would like to modify that too.

I have BBmaps on my at&t 8800 but I don't use it. There are too many times when it can't get a satellite fix or it doesn't update or can't download maps in a timely fashion. Telenav and Maqpquest Navigator don't have these issues in my experience.

You should be able to download OTA or use a modified alx file to get BBmaps loaded if you really want it. Aside from the current position map option that ld-runner mentions there's nothing that BBmaps offers that makes it worthwhile IMO.
