WHAT?!! Are you serious? My Pearl has this while I'm on Rogers BIS only. Is this something completely different on the 8800, or provider specific?

I figured this out. Your BES should've been setup 1st before personal pop3/Imap settings are entered. This is by design I think. Saw a technical document on this just 2 days ago so I cannot remember the full details.
However delete your pop account entirely. Even on the BIS server. Heck remove your PIN from providers BIS setup site.
pull out battery. put back in. Check with provider to resend service books.
then setup your BES first before you gmail account. hope this helps. Cheers.
