Default 8700g Tmobile voice problems

I have had the 8700g for almost a year. Since the start, I had people complaining that they were unable to hear me periodically - periods of about 15-20 seconds every other minute or two. I was hearing them fine and there were no signal issues. Calling Tmobile and RIM did not help - they had me swap devices ($100 fee because of alleged water damage - there was none), and later buy a new SIM card. Nothing helped. I now carry two phones - the 8700g for data, and a nokia for voice. I would switch to another provider or phone in a second, but the only other GSM, Cingular, is apparently equally lacking. I need GSM due to frequent travels to Europe.
Has anyone had a similar experience and if so how was it resolved?

Another option would be to upgrade your OS. I have the 8700g too and until I upgraded it to the latest OS, my calls were a little crappy.
