Default 8800 receiving POP email

Please Login to Remove!

Hi everyone,

I'm a new BB user and have just got myself an 8800. I have set this up to work with my pop email through BIS. It works, and sends instantly, but it seems to take ages to receive emails - is it true it only receives from the server every 15 minutes? I was hoping my pop email would be instant like on my PC.

If not, is there a way to do a manual send/receive like in outlook?

The reason being that if i'm having a email conversation with a customer in outlook, it's instant; almost like doing instant messaging. On the BB it takes ages, as it only seems to receive mail every 15 minutes.

Any help would be appreciated.

Gareth

The BIS polls your POP server at 15m intervals unless it finds an email and then it drops down to 3m for a few cycles until it ~doesn't~ get another new email and then it goes back to 15m again. Etc. IIRC. POP, IMAP, etc. are polling based so that's just the nature of it and I'm unaware of a way to select your BIS polling interval to be lower. -Pk

Thanks for letting me know - so the best I'll ever get is every 3 minutes, but usually every 15? And there's no way at all of getting bis to poll my pop email more often?

I think if you forward everything to either Gmail or Yahoo you might get it faster. But then I find it is not worth all that hassle. A 15-20 minute delay is perfectly acceptable.

It's just a bit of a disappointment - i was expecting instant email as billed (like on my PC), whereas in fact there's a delay. Ah well, if nothing can be done, so be it...

Something can be done. I get my POP mail instantaneously, often before my e-mail desktop client polls for it. Just set your POP mail to redirect to your BB account. You'll get the mail both on your e-mail client and have it immediately pushed to your BB. Very simple and very fast.

You can use gmail or yahoo, you can forward to your *.blackberry.net account (though you won't be able to compose or reply using your email address), or you can use BES if you want faster delivery.

Why aren't you using IM if you want to hold an instantaneous conversation?

ebruder - thanks! That works great.

Takeshi - i can't rely on that as the customer may not have IM abilities + that could lead to me being drawn into a long conversation when i don't have time.

Default POP vs. BES

You might want to consider getting yourself a Microsoft Exchange email account and Blackberry Enterprise Server service.

Instant email + two-way sync of sent/deleted items. Also two-way sync of calendar/contacts/notes/tasks.

Default forwarding prevents deletion from POP

It seems like the problem with this approach is that you cannot delete a message from the POP email account server when it is received via the blackberry account. You have to read the message again from your computer to delete it. Am I missing something?
