Default VZW 8830 "Device" software posted: 8830EFS_PBr4.2.2_rel148_PL3.0.0.45_A4.2.2.66.exe

Verizon's BB page changed and now instead of saying "Desktop" software they have replaced it with one that says "Device" software.

BlackBerry™ 4.x Software Download

BlackBerry 8830™ Handheld and Desktop Software

Select the appropriate download for your BlackBerry 8830 from Verizon Wireless:

BlackBerry Device Software v4.2 (updated 5-23-2007)
Note: This download is for the BlackBerry 8830 from Verizon Wireless only.

VZAccess Manager Software

I'm DLing now and it might be a false alarm but the prior text did indeed say 'Desktop'.... hrmm. -Pk

What is this for and is it necessary to download this "Device software"?

If you have issues with the handheld, you'll need it to reload the OS, in a worst case scenario.

Also, with access to the alx file, you can unlock all the carrier themes.

I downloaded this and installed it on my PC. When launching DM, I was told there were updated versions of a number of things and I was given the opportunity to update. I passed for the moment, having no clue what this would do to my phone.

It'll back up your current info and apps, wipe the device, then load on the updated O/S and apps

Was just told by Data Technical Support that this new "device" software upgrade has to do with "using the device as a modem with a computer". VZW called RIM while speaking with me.

And what happens to my installed programs, custom settings (ringtone assignments, option settings, etc.)?

Do you mean Dialup vs VZAccess?

Like I said, they'll be backed up and then restored at the end. As long as the process doesn't fail (computer crash, usb disconnection) it should be a seamless transition

I get a message 'Could not find the file. Please contact Verizon helpdesk.' when I attempt to download this. If you're willing to email it to me, can you PM me and I'll give you my email?

EDIT: Never mind, after waiting a couple of days I was finally able to download.

It did ~nothing~ for me, only core Device modules, none of the applications appear to be there (say DoD certs or Memopad). My core stuff was already current. -Pk

I ran the update. No problems that I could find in the update process. Didn't mung anything up (that I could discover right away, anyway.)

I've not been able to tether with my Vista Laptop (Thinkpad T60P) via Bluetooth and thought perhaps this would help. It didn't. I can tether via BT just fine on my XP desktop, using a dongle. The Vista laptop just refuses to find Bluetooth Serial Modem services. Don't know why but I spent hours on it without success. Life is tough... I'll have to use a cable.

Correction, it DID fix my backup issue. But that is all, no DoD certs, no applications, no other languages, etc. *sigh* -Pk

I'm seeing the same thing... if someone could PM me with a valid link or the package itself, it would be much appreciated.

...and if you do that 6 times, like I did, it will tell you that you've already downloaded it 6 times, which is the limit!

Default 8830 Device software

May now have a dead 8830 becuase the device software won't load. Anyone else experience this?
I nuked the 8830 using the BlackBerry Manager and this wipes out the existing software and OS. Normally I connect the device goto \\share\apploader\loader.exe, which launches the Application Loader wizard. This would allow me to reinstall the OS previously for all other models I support. However for the 8830, no applications are availible.
Hoping someone else has seen this.

I think I'll lay low on this one for now. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Works OK as a modem for me using the VZW interface software that came with the 8830.
