Contacts - Why is Notes the only field that works??

In Contacts, if I put telephone numbers, email addresses and web sites in their intended spots, and later retreive the Contact entry, the values are not auto-highlighted when I scroll through them. Yet, when I throw them all into the Notes field, they work great - they are each recongnized and I can click on them execute an action. Is there a setting I am missing here? Shouldn't the fields intended for phone numbers, emails and URL's actually work??

To call, when you are in the contact hit trackball and select Call Work, Mobile, etc. You don't have to highlight the number.

From the main addressbook app you can select Menu and Call Work, Mobile, etc..

Yes but the behavior is much different and less scrolling is needed under Notes.

In Notes, when the item is auto-highlighted, it knows what actions are appropriates and prompts you accordingly. And for URLs there is no need to select Get Link -- just click. And for maps ( ie where the link is maps.blackerry.com), it behaves differntly again, and correctly prompts for View Map.

I just find it odd, that it works great if you put everything in Notes, and it works quite different, and not as well, if you put the data them in there proper fields!

I am thinking about re-structuring all my contacts ( ie export them out of Outlook, revise in excel so they are nicely formatred into a single Notes) and then import them back.

Heck, that is a lot of work for what is already an easier way. You don't even have to open a contact to view, all you have to do as it is correctly structured is highlight the contact in the list, scroll to call XX and click. If the contact has more than one phone it will show you the list, and highlight the last one you actually dialed.

What could be easier? Your way will require more scrolling and clicking.

Exactly -- I never view a contact to call or email. There's no need to do so and it makes it more difficult than it really needs to be. You can also hit the green button to initiate a call when you have a contact selected/highlighted. It will prompt you if there are multiple numbers (even defaulting to the last number you used to call the contact).

Actually, in most cases the people I call are on the call log. In those cases, I hit the green key to access that screen, find the contact and hit the green key again to dial.

For email, when you're composing a new email you can just start typing the name in the To: field.

The fields work properly if you use them properly. ;-)

But URLs act differently...

To recap, yes, I concur, for email addresses and phone numbers, the intended fields are appropriate, as a) the functionality to act on the field is still there even if not highlighted and b) one doesnxxx8217;t even have to open the Contacts list for the functionality to work, i.e. hitting the call button will prompt for numbers, composing an email will prompt for email addresses, etc.

But there remains an anomaly with respect to URLs.

Consider the following URL:
http://maps.blackberry.com?lat=44&lo...1&label=Sample
(Above is not intended for use on a desktop/laptop - only works on the blackberry(

If I put this under the Web Page field, nothing happens when I click on it, And if I select menu, I see Get Link, but the link will not work ( ie it does not know itxxx8217;s a map)

HOWEVERxxx8230;.

If I put the same link as part of NOTES, its auto-highlighted, and all I have to do is double click, and it KNOWS itxxx8217;s a map, it prompts me to View Map and it WORKS!

To me this is a critical difference - not just ease of use but actually functionality.

What I dont know yet, is if its just my settings, or if this is native BB 8800 behaviour. If someone else can try the above simple test (put the URL under Web page as well as under NOTES and try each) on thier BB ,it would be appreciated so I can confirm this is not just a local setting issue.

I will try right now.

EDIT: Tested, correct. Some webpages (such as the example above) will not work from the "web page" field in the BB Address Book (even click Menu > Get Link only pulls up the main BlackBerry Maps website). I copied and pasted the link to the "notes" area of the Address Book entry, and it was clickable.

Thanks for the confirmation. Notes does have a value afterall!
