I do recall that the light on the trackball always stays on when the device is powered up and operating.

Is this the case?

It would seem that my BB 8830 is functiong properly, however the trackball itself is not lit up. Is this normal?

There must be some type of "powersave" feature, because the trackball remained UN-Lit for quite some time, and then all of a sudden, out of the clear blue sky, the trackball lit up again.

Is this normal operations? Does the BB do this to conserve on battery consumption?

As far as I know, this is a malfunction. If there IS a way to turn off the trackball light, somebody p-lEASE inform us!!

I would take your handset back to Verizon and get a new one. And don't trust what they tell you at the Verizon stores...I've personally encountered several incompetent sales people on my recent four-month journey to learning about the 8830 and eventually deciding to buy it.

I'm having issues with being able to run applications that I downloaded. I have an e-mail dialogue running with the software company...

First, go to tools, keyboard, and find Automatic Backlight, then just change it to off, and save the setting! The Trackball should light right up afterwards, if it doesn't then bring it back for a new one!
