8830 is it 3G
 

Is the 8830 world device 3G ? basicaly will it also work in Japan ?

It's 3G in the US, using Verizon's EVDO .
It will not work in Japan at all.

Your questions also seem to imply that 3G and Japan-compatibility are related somehow.
This really isn't the case.

The OP asked if the 8830 was 3G, and whether it would work in Japan.
Neither of these questions have anything to do with Vodafone, or whether the 8830 is carrier locked.

My first post was to semi explain what carrier / (GSM) network or partners that it will use outside the U.S. that is how he can find out if it will work or not in Japan... I still fail to see how it was cryptic and misspelled?

You posted one word... (vodaphone) which not only doesn't explain anything to the OP, it's also not spelled correctly. Vodafone is spelled with an F, not a PH.

Sometimes, multiple questions require more than just a one word answer.

Wrong again....GSM is not a technology used in Japan....Japan is on WCDMA

Sorry I was misinformed, I was told and understood that everywhere outside the U.S. used GSM (vodaFone)...

The carrier I am using is vodafone, however, I believe that device supports CDMA and GSM but not WCDMA (I might be wrong) in which case I still wonder how it would work in Japan (WCDMA is a type of 3G network), if this sint supported then how will it work?

You are correct. WCDMA is not supported with the 8830. It will not work in Japan.
I don't think jungleland was saying that it would work... I believe they were just correcting someonexh's post which implied that GSM was used in Japan.

However, this leads me to ask, if its not WCDMA, then what is the difference between this and the 8800 ? Is it because its CDMA and GSM ? Also has anyone seen this list of countries that they say it works in.

Just found this which makes me now scratch my head and start believing that the 8830 will actually work in Japan.

On the link BlackBerry - BlackBerry 8830 , if you check out the specification (at the bottom) it says that the network it supports is Dual-band 800/1900 Mhz CDMA2000 1X Ev-DO networks

I then found link from QUALCOMM ( QUALCOMM Press Center - QUALCOMM Congratulates KDDI on Commercial Launch of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Services in Major Japanese Cities ) which mentions that KDDI telecomms has launched CDMA2000 1X Ev-DO service.

This would imply that if someone went to Japan, a manual network scan would pick up this carrier and if selected, would allow them to hook onto this network and use it successfully.

KDDI has EV-DO service in the 1700 or 1800 MHz band (i can't remember which, I just know it is the same as KTF in South Korea). VZW uses 850 and 1900 MHz. Thus, VZW can't roam on KDDI.

Addtionally, if roaming service was available in Japan with a CDMA phone, then VZW's site would list it as a coverage area, which it does not.
