Default Bye Bye BB, Hello again Treo 700P

Please Login to Remove!

I know it will shock a lot of people on this site, but after almost an entire month with the 8830 and after much trials and tribulations, I have decided that the Treo works better for me. Maybe it is the fact that I have used for over 3 years now and fully used to it, but for me it just works better. I think I can live without the push e-mail. The battery life is a lot better on the Treo along with many other things. I have complied the winners and losers to come to my conclusion

Device Form Factor
Size: = except for the antenna on the 700P about the same
Weight: 8830 Treo weighs a bit more
Thickness: 8830 A lot thinner
Build Strength: Treo (a lot more durable) feels that way
Touch Screen: Treo (BB does not offer) Can do without trackball

OS
BB seems a bit more stable but not very scalable. Very limited 3rd Party Apps.
Treo 700P Garnett (Still waiting for the update so a every so slightly buggy, but can live with it)

Can run Korean and other foreign language font packs and readers. 8830 VZ reports no plans for support anytime soon.

Battery Life: Treo I can go 3-4 days BB only goes about 1.5 days.

E-mail: 8830 This is the core strength. Very useful, but can live without push e-mail. Also, not HTML and attachments hard or impossible to open.

MMS: TREO not support on 8830

SMS: Treo the chat feature enables me to quickly send and receive and organize the msgs from people that I text the most.

Global Roaming: Don't know yet. However, I have a Korean CDMA phone that I use pre-paid while in Korea and it is the most economical way to use a phone in Korea.

Screen Quality: About = both have great screens.

Browser: Treo I tried pages on both devices. Yes, the Treos text is a bit smaller, but it is still legible and more graphics will appear. Furthermore, I can read and type in Korean.

Well, maybe if VZ and BB decided to update the device, I might try it again, but for now, I will stick with the Treo. Much better for me.

My requirements were: PDA Smartphone with capability to MMS, SMS, E-mail (Push or Pull), Web Browse, sync with Outlook, Multi language, and Battery lasts 2-3 days.
The Treo was most suitable in my opinion.

Don't get me wrong, it is a great device, but for me, Treo works out better; especially the Palm OS.

I will still be checking back from time to time.
Chris

I was going to simply reply with a smartass "yawn..."
until I read your post. I appreciate your assessment and comparison of the devices based on your specific needs, rather than just "this one does GPS" and "this one has a better keyboard"....

Thanks for sharing.

Not really. I mean, everyone has different needs and wants. If any one device was "the best" (which doesn't really mean anything when you don't qualify it with needs/wants) we would all be using it. A month is definitely enough time to give a new device a fair shake.

...and to go a bit further with "everyone has different needs and wants", a touch screen has never been a pro in my book. I've never had one on a device that didn't either die or end up so far out of alignment that it was entirely unusable -- even with the alignment tools that such devices offer.

YMMV is what it comes down to. It sounds like you know what you want and you made a fitting choice which is all that matters.

Just simply wrong. Your MMS is not supported by your carrier. My MMS is fully capable on my BB.

You have a 8800 not a 8830, so in essence being that verizon cripples MMS on blackberries, his statement is true if you don't get all over literal.

mines is about the same 1.5 with heavy usage though, I charge mines every night, and at night it's less than half a batter left, so I think it's fair to assume it would last atleast another 1/2 day if I didn't charge it.

HAHA... Thank you. I have gotta do what I gotta do...
I heard the same thing when I went from PPC on the Samsung i700 to the Treo 650. Additionally, I was using the $50 Treo Bluetooth headset with great success on the BB8830. I worked great and the sound quality was awesome. I could go with another carrier, but my last carrier change over a handset resulted it in being thrown out the window on 405 because of constant dropped calls. Will return if all the issues have been resolved. Guys play nice and take care now.

lol, uh, yea, the original post was certainly NOT all literal!

(but he said "MMS: TREO not support on 8830", so my assumption was he thinks MMS is not supported on his BB, when it certainly is. His carrier just doesn't.)

Furthermore, bofa and a few other sites work and look so... much better minus the small fonts on the Treo.

When are people going to realize that BB's are for BUSINESS. If you want MMS, a camera, Mp3 capabilities etc. go to the Treo's and other PDA's. However, if you are looking for a solid phone with a stable OS, email, SMS, a battery life superior to others then a BB is for you.

I don't care what anyone says....I've owned three Treo's and now I own an 8703e. By FAR the BB's have a better battery life then any Treo. If your battery life didn't last long on your BB then you were using it non-stop EVERY second of the day or you got a bum battery.

As for the 8830.......I'm holding off another month or so to see if the kinks are taken out by Verizon and RIM. Otherwise, I'll get another 8703.

I see your point, and believe you me it is a major SOB that a high-end phone is not MMS enabled. It caused me to return my first blackberry (8703e)...

My 8800c will be going Bye-Bye when I see the iPhone and/or the Nokia E90 Communicator. That E90 looks like an awesome phone!

I would have to agree. There are so many business that would benefit from being able to send pictures back and forth. Yes, it can be done on the BB 8830, but it was a big hassle. The Vzpix forwarded to you e-mail bit was a bit too much. Also, I am one of those people that get Office voicemail as an e-mail attachment and because no MMS, I cannot open them. Constantly get failure messages.

And, there are so many people/users that would benefit from simply researching the device BEFORE they purchase it. In your case, not being able to MMS is a Verizon/user issue. And an issue you could have easily found out about beforehand. If it had been such a deal-breaker issue and you did ask... well, that is your deal.

Good luck with it all.

The battery lasts too long to be a bum battery. Also, the 8830 and 8703e is very different and I have used the 8703e. and the battery life seems better than the 8703e. Aside from everything else the lack of Multiple languages is what really did it.

If you notice, I did not mention MP3 as the reasoning. It is not a requirement for me. SMS and e-mail in Korean and Japanese is a must. Being able to view their websites is also. I just wished the 8830 was a bit more intuitive.
