Talking My impressions on the Blackberry 8830

Please Login to Remove!

Yesterday (6/10) I was eligible for a VZW New Every Two device upgrade and selected the Blackberry 8830 after reading the various forums and decided to give it a whirl.

The only major problem that I had was importing 3rd party apps from my old Blackberry 7250 to the 8830. It turns out that I had downloaded the wrong BBDM from vzw.smithmicro.com/blackberry. I had the updated BBDM for the 7250, not the 8830. So tonight I will try again and import the 3rd party apps over to the 8830. This is particularly important as I've been using JabPLite for managing my checkbook while on the go.

I'm also a bit disappointed with the Internet Browser. I can't login to Netflix Online Movie Rentals - Rent DVDs, Classic Films to DVD New Releases - Free Trial but that was alleviated when I found out that there was a WAP enabled site at mobile.netflix.com. Though you can't reorder your Netflix queue with it.

I really like the display, it's a far cry from the 7250! Vivid colours and sharp text along with the automatic backlight adjustment.

I've yet to try the media player but from what I've seen it looks very impressive. The video player is much brighter than my iPod video display.

I've no plans to use it as a tethered modem since VZW has a very draconian terms of service "agreement" whereby I can't use YouTube or other streaming audio and video site.

Next month I plan to add the microSD card, I'm currently waiting for the 4 gig microSDs to come out.

Verizon sells 4gb MicroSD currently, online and at most stores.

Been using the 4GB card for a couple of days and have had no problem. I am using mass storage vs Roxio as I have already formated most of my video for my IPOD.

Apparently the 8830 needs to have the OS upgraded first to 4.2.2.66 (courtesy of vzw.smithmicro.com/blackberry) in order for the 4 gb card to work.

Thankfully, my 8830 had 4.2.2.66 installed on it!

does anyone know where we can see a copy of Verizon's TOS in regards to what you can and cannot access when using the 8830 as a tethered modem?

This is what you're looking for: Verizon Wireless BroadbandAccess Terms & Conditions

And specifically:
Quote:
Data Plans and Features (such as NationalAccess, BroadbandAccess, GlobalAccess, and certain VZEmail services that do not include a specific monthly MB allowance or are not billed on a pay-as-you-go basis) may ONLY be used with wireless devices for the following purposes: (i) Internet browsing; (ii) email; and (iii) intranet access (including access to corporate intranets, email, and individual productivity applications like customer relationship management, sales force, and field service automation). These Data Plans and Features MAY NOT be used for any other purpose. Examples of prohibited uses include, without limitation, the following: (i) continuous uploading, downloading, or streaming of audio or video programming or games; (ii) server devices or host computer applications, including, but not limited to, Web camera posts or broadcasts, automatic data feeds, automated machine to-machine connections or peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing; or (iii) as a substitute or backup for private lines or dedicated data connections. This means, by way of example only, that checking email, surfing the Internet, downloading legally acquired songs, and/or visiting corporate intranets is permitted, but downloading movies using P2P file-sharing services and/or redirecting television programming content for viewing on laptops is prohibited. A person engaged in prohibited uses continuously for one hour could typically use 100 to 200 MB, or, if engaged in prohibited uses for 10 hours a day, 7 days a week, could use more than 5 GB in a month.

For individual use only and not for resale. We reserve the right to protect our network from harm, which may impact legitimate data flows. We reserve the right to limit throughput speeds or amount of data transferred, and to deny or terminate service, without notice, to anyone we believe is using one of these Data Plans or Features in any manner prohibited above or whose usage adversely impacts our network or service levels. Anyone using more than 5 GB per line in a given month is presumed to be using the service in a manner prohibited above, and we reserve the right to immediately terminate the service of any such person without notice. We also reserve the right to terminate service upon expiration of Customer Agreement term.
