Default unlocked 8700 won't work...please help!

Please Login to Remove!

hello there...first off im very new to BB...i just received a new BB 8700 I bought on ebay...it was supposed to be unlocked...and I think it is because it has Tmobile branding, but a cingular screen pops up when I turn it on. I inserted my SIM (rogers) and the phone still says insert sim. Is there a reset or anything I need to do? If anyone could help that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The Cingular splash screen doesn't mean it's unlocked.

Go to:

Options > SIM card

And then type mepd on the keypad.

Tell us what is says next to Network.

If it says 'active' then the phone is Locked.

Network Disabled = Unlocked.
Are you sure you have the SIM card seated well?
This stuff happens too often to Ebay Phones.

I had a very similar problem, with no positive outcome

See: http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...0c-please.html

I was forced to return my unit and get another one from someone else locally so that I could try it before hand.

Good Luck !!!!

it's not a matter of being a BB noob, no offense. SIM cards are inserted the same way on every phone. The side where the metals contacts are closest too, gets inserted first.

This is one of the real problems buying a used BB. First, you need to ensure that you have a BB dataplan and that the device is properly provisioned. Your carrier will do this. No dataplan no email and no Internet.

You also need to contact the buyer and have them cancel their BIS account with their carrier and release the IMEI and PIN so you can set up your BIS account with your carrier (Rogers?).

In addition, if the BB was used on BES, you will need to remove the IT policies. There are several threads on this, so I suggest you do a search on "remove IT policies".

i agree, buying a used Blackberry can be really messy. if you do it, be prepared to have to do a lot of work on it to get it up and running correctly.

ya I dont plan on upgrading my current call only plan at the moment...just using it as a glorified text machine...more of a trial run until my current contract runs out and I can get the curve or whatever the latest and greatest is then. For now I'll just hide buddies email icon and pretend they're not there. Not sure what this guy was thinking but he left a lot of personal info on here...not too smart

Let's not be naive here... I'm sure the seller didn't sell you their own device.
It's likely stolen and they simply wanted to unload it on you.

A good possibility. I would wipe it and try to have the BIS account removed. that way you don't get into trouble by using the device.
