| 4 BROKEN 8830s Please Login to Remove! This might be lenghty, but I appreciate anyone who reads it and might have some input...
I am on my 4th 8830, and this one is broken too. All 4 have had the same problem. Here it is:
Sometimes when I press the send key to call a phone number, the screen goes black, the red light comes on, and the phone turns off and then comes back on again. After it turns back on it may work normally for a little while, even up to a day, but then without fail the problem strikes again. One time during all of this I got a message that said "device error 248 (or 348, I forgot which)"
I have no third party software. I have done soft and hard resets. I have even manually transfered all of my contact information from one phone to the next so as not to use the restore function and carry over a potential virus from one phone to the next. The problem is not linked to dialing a certain phone number as it will sometimes dial the same number properly, and sometimes not. I have completely uninstalled and then reinstalled the desktop manager to make sure there wasn't some kind of bug related to the previous 8830 that would affect this one. If there is any regularity to this problem, it tends to happen in the morning after my BB has been on standby all night, but it can happen at any point.
Verizon will of course give me another handset, but should I believe that the 5th time will be the charm? Is there something I am doing? Thanks in advance any sort of help. | | Offline

| Sounds like you've just got one heck of a string of bad luck.
This is actually the first I am hearing of such a problem.
There's been some issues with the 8830 since it was released, but I haven't seen anything like you're describing.
Go with #5 and hope for the best. If it's the same thing, then I'm at a loss for sure. | | Offline

The problem with the 8703 is that it will actually cost me more than the 8830 because of 8830 rebates and it doesn't seem right to pay more for older (and heavier) technology, though I guess it's not better tech! | | Offline

| It almost sounds as if you are giving your BB a virus; if that's possible.
I'm not sure. It's just odd that it only happens to you!

I've thought of this--is there any way that my computer is loading something onto my phone when it is connected? | | Offline

| I have been lucky to have only one error so far, I was on the internet and it wouldn't let me on it said I was on a call and I wasn't. I did a hard reset and it was fine. Soft reset did nothing. | | Offline

| You may have a microSD with Errors? I remember that getting the 348 error when I first put in my microSD card. I stopped the problem by taking it, putting it into a SD adapter, putting it into a media reader on a desktop and using the Microsoft software to clean up the errors. The error went away and the microSD card started working. Just a thought if you have a microSD plugged in. | | Offline

| there could be a batch that were manfactured with problems. I mean when you make hundreds of thousads of devices on a line, there are bound to be mistakes or bad chips or whatever.
My suggestion is that a batch could have shipped all to the same store or area, so try going elsewhere to get it replaced. good luck | | Offline

| The last time I talked with Verizon tech support (about 3 days ago) the person recommended that I install my SIM card into the phone and register it with the phone, even though I do not plan on using my phone abroad. Since I have done that the problem has not happened again! Could be chance, or could be the fix, but either way I'm happy right now. Could be something similar to the Micro SD card fix. I will post again if anything changes for me. | | Offline

Then I thought the phone has SIM cards that store contacts on there too. THen I see you put the SIM card in and issues went away. Even though the SIM card is used for global, there is still a GSM network in the states. For anyone who deals with cell phones, whos to say that it tries the GSM first then the CDMA network or CDMA first then GSM. Only the VZW people know I bet. THose are my 2 cents.

| 5 phones later
The answer was...
BAD SIM CARDS!
I now have a phone that works 98 percent of the time. 4 gig flash.
And no sim card.
I have been up to Tier 3 verizon and hours of time on the phone with blackberry.
Take your sim card out. Wait about an hour.
Works great! I love my phone again. | | Offline

| I just returned from a trip overseas (Barbados) and experienced the same error message (348 device error-restart). The phone would restart about every minute or so. The odd part is that as long as I was able to place/establish a phone call the device wouldnxxx8217;t restart. I played around with the settings and the device worked just fine when I set the data services to xxx8220;off when roamingxxx8221;. <<Options - > mobile networks -> Data services xxx8211; off when Roaming>> I wasnxxx8217;t able to get my emails (not cool) by voice and text worked without the constant restart/reboots. | | Offline

| Okay...So phone number 5 ended up having error 348.
Turns out some idiot at verizon entered the wrong Pin Number for me from the get go.
Now...I don't even use the pin card but every night the system reboots and this Sim number keeps getting attached to my phone.
After countless hours nearly every day, Verizon seems to think they have solved the problem. I am (---) <----that close to getting a Treo.
My old treo never gave me this many problems.
Between the b.s. sinking issues and everything else this phone is not worth it.
I was also told by the Tier 3 verizon support that the update is most likely coming in the next 3-4 weeks for the Calender sync patch and a few other issues.
Oy...I hope my phone works tomorrow. | | Offline

| I had the same problem with a BB I bought from telesales. Exactly the same problem, just resetting itself. Even worse, when I tried to soft-off, it would do the same and just reset itself. Tier 2 tech support basically told me it wasn't worth the hassle and that I should go replace it.
I finally gave in, sat at the VZ store for an hour+ and got a new one. Knock on wood, hasn't 348'd yet. | | Offline

| 2 day's since no error 348. I do have the occasional reset still which is annoying.
My fiance's 8830 also resets a bit. On monday sending the phone's logs to my Tier 2 contact at blackberry.
This has been such a hassle. | | Offline
