Check you have OS 4.2 (OPtions-> About). Also you may be interested in MAsterDoc which allows playuing and saving MP3 and WAV attachments as files to your BB memory for further playing and sending as attachments. Here's a link to it http://dynoplex.com/blackberry/software/masterdoc.html

you can also try this: upload the mp3 ringtone in a free website, and download it there from you BB Browser.

mp3's are not a supported format for email attachments. I would suggest upgrading your Desktop Manager to 4.2 SP2 with Roxio Media Manager and then updating the OS on your 8700g to this one:

4.2.1.96 for 8700c/g

This will allow you to save the mp3 to your PC and then load it to the BB via Desktop Manager/Media Manager

I have the same issue on the Pearl. It tries to retrieve the MP3 and then says "Unrecognized document format". I don't see why it won't just save it to any location of my choice since no conversion is necessary. I have the latest OS installed.

I know for music, I was able to make things work by making it a .wma file. I am not sure if that applies to your question.

The file plays just fine if I transfer it to the Pearl via Bluetooth or if I put it on my web server and download the file via the Pearl browser. When I email it to myself, however, it refuses to download the attachment and gives me the "Unrecognized document format" error. How can it be unrecognized when the phone plays it without a problem?
