I am currently travelling in China and my 5-month-old 8800 (never dropped, perfect condition) track ball has stopped being able to 'select' things. It can move up, down, left and right but when I go to click something...nothing happens.

I searched and found the instructions to take the trackball assbly out and 'clean' it. After doing this twice it STILL does not work. I have down hard resets, soft resets...nothing. Now - my 500 dollar 5 month old device is pretty much useless when i really need it most (and have no where to get it fixed).

Does anyone have ANY idea how to fix this problem??? Thanks in advance for your insight...

I wouldn't take it out. Try a q-tip with some rubbing alcohol. That worked with mine. Also, press the ball and roll it in several different directions. That should dislodge any lint or anything else that might have gotten in it.

BTW, do you carry it in your pocket?

Other option is to blast some compressed air in the area of the trackball. Worked for me when my trackball started acting up.

I have a 3 day old 8800. I just started using it and the trackball only moves the pointer up and down. Is there any way to fix this or do I return it to Blackberry?? This is not good for a brand new device!!!

Try pushing on it and rolling it at the same time. You can also blow real hard on it or used canned compressed air. If those simple things don't fix it then I would return it since it's so new.

I've had the same issue with my 8830. The trackball wont "select." I exchanged it for a new one today.

I went to a concert, BB was in my pocket... probably got kinda moist, but the trackball no longer selects.

Putting the 8800 in a pocket is a huge mistake, especially since it uses the trackball!

Had same issue with my 4 month old BB. Did the Q-tip and compressed air bit. No worky for me. Ended up getting it replaced under the 1 year warranty.
