They've posted their 4.2.2.123 OS for download:

*Note: It should contain the fix the calendar sync issues.

They wanted to charge me $699++ at the Bell Store today! I've been a BM customer for 6 years+, have a monthly company bill in the $1,000s and other corporate business.

WHAT THE F**K? Shouldn't I be able to buy this unit for $300 on a 3 year? Any help?

JB: Yeah, you should have been able to get it for around $250/3yr deal.

My 7250 is about to drop dead and I need to get it swapped out asap. I've called around to as many stores as I can find using their store locator (many stores don't even answer the phone) without success. I've tried calling 310-BELL but the service rep's have been less than helpful and only repeatedly suggest using their store locator on the web site no matter how many times you tell them that you've already done that.

Like JB I use my blackberry for work and have a big fat plan with Bell. I'm ready to move my number to Rogers if my phone finally gives up it's ghost as a day without mobile phone/e-mail could possibly cost me more than a years service.

Can anyone point me to a store that actually has 8830's in stock?

You should be able to but you will need to be careful and do a couple of extra steps. See this thread for instructions: http://www.blackberryforums.com/medi...-4-2-only.html

You basically just need to install the Bell version, delete the vendor.xml file and then replace the Blackberry.alx file with the Verizon version.

I'm installing this right now. I'll post back with results.

I can get you the phone for 200 + 200 bill credit :D

Bell doesn't care for their current customers, but they will do anything for new ones

Just finished installing the Bell software on my Verizon 8830. Works great. I'm on BES so I can't test the calendar synch issue, but everything appears to work fine.

Hmmm. I didn't even think of that, so I turned on my GPS in options and ran Google Maps. It asked me if it was ok to give GMaps access to my GPS!. Eventually GMaps gave me the message "Location signal too weak to pinpoint". This might be because I'm inside, or because GPS just won't work with Verizon.

When I go to BBMaps options the only setting for GPS Source in "None".

I'll be heading outside in a bit and I'll try Google Maps again.

I hate verizon. You may have to uninstall bbmaps and reinstall it to see the gps options.

Someone with a Bell 8830, what options do you have under GPS in the advanced menu? Does it show your coordinates?

I thought I saw over on Google maps that the 8830 was not one of the choices for there phones listed?

I am hesitant to install another BBerry OS on my VZW 8830. Is there any benefits in doing this?

Verizon is sure to publish a new version any day now if Bell has the new version published. The new version supposedly fixes the calendar synch problem for Desktop users. That would be the primary reason to upgrade at this point.

The new version also fixed a media player problem that caused it to error whenever I received a message.

Well, you were right, re-installing BBMaps now allows me to select the internal GPS, but it never gets past searching for satellites.

I don't have a lot of hope that simply installing the Bell version of the software will magically make VZW crippled GPS work, but it's fun to hope I certainly does something a little differently, but still no love from the GPS.

The link in my original message has pretty good instructions for how to upgrade. Whenever you upgrade using another carrier's software you always want to delete the vendor.xml file after installing the new carrier's software. If you don't want the new carrier's themes, you should also replace the new vendor's blackberry.alx file with your old carrier's .ALX file.

Still no love on the GPS, sorry.

Default OK, One Hurdle Passed

Now that it is proven that other vendors can suppy an 8830 with working CDMA and GPS it is apparent that there are no physical reasons for Verizon to disable the GPS on the phones they supply to their customers. There was one comment in one of the forums that CDMA and GPS were not compatible in the same box. Now we know that is false.

I did the Verizon email survey on Monday and got called today. I had complained about Verizon turning off the GPS on a "World Edition" phone. It was apparent that the manager speaking to me was aware of what I was complaining about. While I question if anything positive will happen at least someone from Verizon called me to hear my complaint.
