You don't have to get the Cingular version of the OS, here is the latest version of the OS:

You must have the BlackBerry Data Plan with AT&T for email, data, etc. Other plans won't do the same.

There's no conflicting information, you won't be able to use the email function of the BB, and you won't be able to use the data transfer needs of the BB to it's fullest extent, without a BlackBerry Data Plan. There are dozens of functions of the BB that will not work without a Data Plan and BIS/BES.

You may be able to get Opera Mini to work (many do, some can't), and some of the other apps that use TCP connections (like some instant message apps--many do, some cant't). There will be other apps that call on the internet browser to connect to the internet, so those won't work for you.

You need to watch your AT&T billing closely, should they decide to start charging you for the bandwidth. They can.

RAZR. Blackberry. There's the difference.

BB's require access to the BB APN for data services. It's the way they're designed. Some people have been able to use Opera Mini and Gmail with a standard data plan. If you've seen threads indicating that it's possible then go back and re-read those threads to make sure that you've done everything that you need to do to get it to work.

Default bs

well, the last post is just flat out wrong

i dont have bis or bes and yet i use opera to surf, jivetalk to im, gmail program by google for my email... this device is great even without bis / bes if you have unlimited data...

yes i realize razr and blackberry are different but the newer bb software added the tcp option which allows 3rd party access... its not voodoo, some of you say it may or may not work... NO , it WILL work if you configure it right... i dont know if you guys sell the plans or are just angry for paying for them... also i figured out how to load .jar/.jad without BIS/BES or OTA

load .jar/.jad without conversion and without OTA for people with no BIS or BES - Today, 11:24 PM

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

well, i recently got a unlocked blackberry, didnt want to add the bis or bes since i have unlimited data on my service and have used my other phone all the time for internet anyway....

anyway , i was able to get opera/aim/gmail/msn etc etc etc working

there are people that will tell you cant do this without a bis/bes but they are dead wrong... if you configure it right theres NO need for bis or bes if you dont care about using blackberrys browser or email...

another thing, there are threads around describing how to convert .jar/.jad to .alx/.cod... theres no need...

i stumbled on a post that told of a way to transfer .jar w/ media manager... this method still works... BUT you have to use 4.2 service pack one desktop software... the version BEFORE the one with the roxio media manager...

anyway... just transfer the .jar/.jad to your pictures/games folder from the old media manager... expore to the folder from your media icon on the blackberry, choose open on the .jar.... then it will give you the option to download... works like a charm... no need for ota or bis or bes
