Sprint EDVO/Data Transmission Speeds vs. AT&T I have both the AT&T 8800 and the Sprint 8830 - am doing a side by side trial here in Los Angeles. As of now I do not see any significant speed differential between the two and sometimes AT&T is a tad faster with web pages. I have tried downloading files up to 800KB (the 1MB+ ones that come into e-mail do not come with the attachment) and Sprint is maybe one half second faster. I have not tried a tethering test just yet and perhaps that is where there will be a difference? From a general email perspective I have set up both my Yahoo and Mac accounts. There is up to a 10 minute differential in delivery times - sometimes Sprint ahead and sometimes AT&T. Perhaps all of the speed success is dependent upon the area one lives or works. Look forward to any comments and/or help. Thanks |
Which technology are you using on the AT&T side? It can't be EDGE because that's way slower than EVDO. I think Sprint is coming out with an updated version of EVDO which is supposed to be even faster. |

According to a friend, they are already rolling it out. He says his phone is firmware upgradeable to use it and keeps making fun of me because I'm stuck on T-Mobile with EDGE. :x |

well certain paarts of att net ar eqiped with hsdpa 3.5g sprint is curently equiping their net with wimax wich is 4 g |
Go to 2wire.com on both the phones and do a speed test. I get about 2mbps on the BB 8830 Sprint EVDO, my treo would get about 600-900kbps same location and I know its because the treos browser sucked and couldnt handle the EVDO speed. |
treos suck donkey ballz, I just convinced m boss to dump them and get blackberries in OCT. |
There was a thread quite some time ago comparing the EVDO to EDGE blackberries and the conclusion was when using a BB it doesn't make a difference, as you have seen. The browser and processor didn't allow the BB to get a perfomance boost with EVDO. However, tethering made a big difference with the EVDO BB providing a high speed connection for a laptop. Regards-Michael G. |
mgerbasio is correct, you wont see much difference on the device itself, the difference is when tethering. Also at&t charges extra for tethering and Sprint does not. |
People keep overlooking that when they complain about the lack of 3G on current BB's. Unless you're tethering, odds are that you probably won't see much of a difference. The bottleneck in rendering pages needs to be overcome before it's really a useful feature. |
Helpful, great information!(y) |

On the device - web browsing will be very similar between and EDGE 8800 and an EVDO 8830. Tethering is a whole other story. The EVDO 8830 will pwn the 8800 on EDGE. |
