Default Phone app search behavior

Please Login to Remove!

I tend to press the green phone button to initiate a call because chances are that I am going to call someone that I just recently called, and can scroll down the log to find their number.

However, I noticed if I need to call someone new, rather than going to the address book to find them, I can just start typing their name in the space for the phone number, and a tiny one line display at the bottom of the screen will begin to narrow down the choices as I type.

It's tiny because my font is 7 point. If I make my font 12 point, the display gets bigger and actually has a little scroll bar within it; but I'd have to make it a huge font to be able to see more than one line at a time.

Is there a trick to this? I can't imagine that it's only functional with giant type!

Something doesn't sound right. It should use the same font as your default font set in Options->Screen/Keyboard. It should the same size as in messages. You also said "a tiny one line display at the bottom of the screen". On mine I get a multi-line display right under the large number/name I typed. My font size is also 7. There are no other settings that control the phone dialing application that I know of. Your's sounds different than normal. Have you tried a battery pull?

That is how my 8800 behaves, as well. 'Search' line immediately below the lary phone number and the font is the same as my default screen font (8 pt)

I guess I will need to figure out the battery pull technique next...

I did load PocketDay, ToDoMatrix and IdeaMatrix and haver been fooling with the standard (included) themes. I don't know if that would have an effect. Now that I observe more closely, it might be showing *three* tiny lines, but they are being drawn below the screen -- like I can see the tops of the second row letters changing as I scroll.

What font/size are you using and what setting do you have for the phone log (log, recent or most frequent)?

Also, how do you guys call someone back quickly? Maybe my methodology is wrong. With my old Razr I was used to pressing the Send key, scrolling down to highlight the name, and pressing send again.

Is that the best way in the BB? Or do you go to the Messages icon and scroll down that? I have to admit I am a little confused as to why the phone log shows in the phone app and in the message app instead of one or the other?

Jane, I don't understand your problem with the font sizes, so I won't comment there.

To call the last number you called, press the green key twice.
To call another recent number in the recent call list, do the same as you said you did with your Razr.

You can remove the phone log from your messages list, if you don't want to see it there--Phone > Options > Call Logging = None.

Good luck.

BBClarity 8 point

In settings (Menu > Options > Call Logging), I have it set to NONE and nothing appears in my message app.

That's how I have mine set up.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/2.0 (compatible; MSIE 3.02; Windows CE; PPC; 240x320) BlackBerry8800/4.2.1 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

This is a bug - it happens to mine as well. It's almost as though the phone app thinks the screen is larger than it is, because scrolling seems to go below the bottom of the list and the further down I go, the further up I have to go for the cursor selection to become visibe again. I tried switching themes, font sizes, and call log options, but the only thing that seems to fix it is a battery pull. I tend to leave my phone on for days to weeks, and I get a lot of calls, so maybe this is a fringe case that most wouldn't notice, but I really hope rim/at&t release a fix soon.

Fwiw, I have a cingular branded 8800, with the cingular theme and bb clarity 7 pt font. I have installed only a few third party apps, like google maps, bb maps, and a couple games.

What OS are you running? I just upgraded to the latest AT&T (ver 139) and don't have this 'bug'. I am not saying that it does not exist, just that I am not experiencing it. Could be fixed by the OS? I hadn't checked this issue prior to upgrading from the stock OS.

Jeffv -- thanks, that was it! Battery pull and everything is absolutely fine. I am using 4.2.2.66 OS.

I also keep my phone on all the time I wonder if it would have corrected itself if I had just turned it off/on.

Thanks a bunch,
jan

A battery pull will often fix or repair 90% of the odd glitches.

I don't have an upgraded OS, in fact I didn't know one was available. I love my 8800 so much that I'm not sure I'm willing to risk an upgrade, but there are some wierd things that would be nice to fix (NullPointerException once in a while when I dial a phone number - that dtmf tone keeps playing until the phone app is restarted and a key is pressed; some gps apps leaving gps turned on (berry411 I think) even when they're in the background, causing my battery to drain in a day instead of three).

Glad the battery pull helped, I'm going to start doing that once a week.
