I have been trying to upgrade my 8700C to 4.2 but every single version I have tried gives me the same problem. The external speaker turns on and off which sounds like a clicking sound. I already called ATT/Cingular which in turn got me in touch with RIM. They made me do all kinds of troubleshooting and they think it is the device and want me to RMA it. The RMA fee is higher than getting a new one these days Plus I think it's a software issue since 4.1 does not exhibit the said issue.

Anyway, I just installed the Proximus 4.2 version and I'm getting a java exception when the device powers on. I noticed that the "clicking" sound was gone but the LED indicator was off. I proceeded to turn the LED on and immediately, the "clicking" sound came back. R&R the battery and the "clicking" sound remains as long as the LED is active.

There are at least 2 other people on the board that are having the same issue with 4.2. RIM doesn't acknowledge that it's the software. Mine is 15 months old so it's not covered under warranty.

I also have this problem and am looking forward to a solution. I have a German 8700V from Vodafone. I've tried out multiple Firmware versions including the 4.2.1.94 available from Vodafone Germany.

This is not the only problem with OS 4.2 - my blackberry is resetting when it tries to access certain ringtones - during editing the profiles, being called or using the media gallery.

I would go back to 4.1. 4.2 offers little unless you need media control. I never had issues with 4.1. I did upgrade to 4.2 but did not have any issues.

I'm also experiencing all the problems you mentioned. I installed the 4.2 t-mobile OS and the clicking sound goes away after I R&R the battery but comes back after 10~15 minutes. This is with or without the LED turned on. I'm running 4.1 OS for now but I will try every 4.2 available.

I have the same problem and my audio on my phone calls keep going out. The call is still connected but the only thing i can hear is a clicking sound. i have tried all of the versions of 4.2 and i have even exchanged my phone. I have a 8700g with tmo and am running 4.2.1.91 right now.

have a 8700V and tried few 4.2 versions including the latest, but the problems remain the same:
- clicking noise coming from speaker
- bluetooth cracking noise (same rythm as speaker clicking)
- reboots during call receiving or ringtone playing
- Battery life reduced to half (without bluetooth) may well be because of the speaker

any idea around?

It is absolutely the software. Cingular tried to tell me the same thing about it being hardware. It didn't have the problem 10 minutes before I upgraded to 4.2. What a crock.
