Default 8830 unlock? Free GPS usage?

Please Login to Remove!

I'm new to blackberry but will be purchasing an 8830 in about a month before I move to England. I have a couple questions that I'm hoping someone can answer.
a) Can you unlock both the CDMA and GSM functions on the 8830? Has anyone managed successfully?
b) I've been reading some threads about bb maps, google maps and so forth. Does this mean that once you download these maps, assuming your phone has been unlocked, that you can use GPS services without paying data charges?

Thanks,

A- no, you must use it on the network for which it was designed--GSM or CDMA.
B- unlocking has nothing to do with it. The Sprint 8830 has gps, as well as the 8800 from TMo or ATT. There are no "additional" data charges, other than the BB Data Plan you have from your carrier. Some gps apps like TeleNav have a monthly subscription, but with them it is totally worth $10 month.

B - You don't have to pay data charges for GPS. However, since no GPS app for the BB comes with maps on the media card you do need a BB data plan to download maps.

As JSanders pointed out, some GPS apps have a price/service fee. Some don't. Generally, the more fully featured GPS apps do cost money. I recommend reading up in the GPS forum.

Default GPS Not Working

My 8830 GPS -- which works fine in the States -- does not appear to be active here in the UK. Is there something with the setup that I need to specify to get it operational. BTW, I do have line of sight to sats when testing this. When I go to Options, Advanced, GPS it reports No GPS source.

Any thouhts?

I have an international data plan from Sprint so technically no UK data plan provided by a UK carrier. Data access on the international plan is being provided by Vodaphone UK. O2 and tmo are available networks as well. Orange is listed as available, but with an "X" next to it.

I have a Canadian TELUS 8830. Works on both CDMA and GSM and GPS is unlocked.
