Im sure some RIM insiders visit these boards, so can someone please confrim: Will the 8800 get the the OS upgrade, or is full screen video (among other improvements) just not in the cards here?

I doubt you'll get a direct response. Odds are likely. I mean the 8700's just got 4.2. It's doubtful that RIM would drop support for the 8800 so quickly.

Heck with 4.2.2 ! Let's get 4.3 w/ streaming video support!

OS v4.5 will include GPS that drives your car for you. Also, as an added feature (thanks to an environmentally-conscious RIM), it will also plant trees during the evening hours when idling for more than 20 minutes (no Birch or Redwood compatibility yet, though; expect that in v4.6). Expect this OS to be released on the up-and-coming BlackBerry 88,000,000, which will include a small but powerful flamethrower, a laser cutter, and a deep-fryer.

Oh, and there will still be issues with ringing volume.

Also in v4.6 Verizon will start charging for use of applications. (basically if you touch any buttons)

it's my uderstanding that there will be no 4.2.2 for the 8800, since 4.3 is due around October for release to carriers.

It also (kind of) make sense that they will hold-off on releasing 4.2.2 as much as they can, so existing 8800 users will be 'encouraged' to buy the new 8820s instead of just updating their OS version to get some of the new features.

I think they're trying to limit the confusion of the versions of handheld code out there. Before the 8700, handheld code seemed like it was rolling from week to week. Well not really, but it felt like that...

I spoke to RIM support yesterday and asked the same question. They confirmed that yes, it does exist, but is up to our vendor AT&T to release.

That was my understanding as well. RIM has release 4.2.2 to the vendors and it's up to them to release it for their own phones (after testing, verification, etc, etc.) On top of that I heard that this was held back on the 8800 to encourage consumers to purchase the 8300 and the 8830.

This I can understand from a business perspective but it doesn't mean I have to like it! I just obtained an 8800 a month ago and a co-worker got the 8300. I really want the media player and folder options. Funny enough the folder images exist on the 8800 but I can't use them... sigh...

Of course everything I've said here I've gleened from other websites and could be completely false but so far it's the best I've found that makes the most sense.

What is lacking in the 8800 OS, for me, is the 8300 spell checker! If the 8800 is "surposed" to be the corp. machine, where is the spell checker?

Hoping the new 8820 will have it.

Iunno, man ... I don't use mine as a Media Player, got my Nokia N73 for that ... used to have a Creative Zen Vision:M, but that was dropped a few times too many.

By the by, I hear that OS v4.7 will actually cause the device's case to systematically regenerate when damaged, kind of like Wolverine from X-Men. =)
