Media Manager & Roxio
 

My employer requires that we use their tweaked version of the Blackberry OS. I downloaded and installed the image they provided from our intranet, but it is missing media manager & Roxio. I would assume this is to minimize the footprint and support for "non-business" type applications.

However, I paid for the phone out of my pocket and I plan to use it as I see fit - within reasonabale business guidelines of course. That being said, can I just download these components and install them as separate applications without tampering with the verision currenty installed?

The executable they had me download was a silent install, which gave me NO chance to control what was being done or what could be installed. I thought I was just extracting the binaries.

I have a Sprint 8830 (which I am very pleased with, I should add). When I do a Help --> About Desktop Manager, I get version 4.2.2.14 [April 26, 2007].

But it won't make a difference if your company have an IT policy restricting you from using it.

Media Manager with Roxio seems like serious bloatware. I hated it so much (so load times, crashing etc), that I uninstalled Version 4.2 of the Desktop Manager and went back to 4.1. Problems solved.

Well, I guess I am confiused. I have heard some people say on this forum that they have to use media manager to transfer video files to their 8830 for the device to recognize it.

Personally, this does not make alot of sense to me as I would think as long as it is encoded properly & you put it somewhere the device can find it, you should be good to go. I have been playing with video playback on Palm devices and the PSP for several years. I assumed the process would be similar for the Blackberry, but I could be wrong.

So I guess the underlying question is do I need media manager and this Roxio tool to be able to play video on a Sprint 8830? If it is indeed just bloatware - so be it, I'll pass. But I got the impression there was something "magic" about it beyond just moving files from PC to BB & encoding video. Yes / no/ maybe????

I can't even get the video on the phone WITH the software. It just gives me an error saying "File cannot be transferred", it doesn't say WHY or anything. I seriously am mad at the idiot who approved that error message.

I, too, have been very pleased with the Sprint 8830. After getting the "endless hourglass" from the Roxio program, I switched to the Windows Media Player and was able to load my CD audio files onto the 8830 with no problem. Have not attempted video files yet. BTW, it is a major challenge finding a 2.5mm adapter that will operate stereo earbuds correctly.

For the adapter, check out Seido's product line. I have their adapter at it works great.

Video is tricky on the Blackberry. The "convert for optimal playback" option in the Roxio software does a good job of converting most video podcasts into a BB friendly form. What the BB likes is H.263 encoding, 320x240 for 4x3 video or 320x180 for 16x9, at 24 frames per second.
