If you are talking about converting a DVD movie so that you can watch it on your BB, I use and would recommend Media Studio for Blackberry, DVD and video to Blackberry - only two clicks needed.

I use the ImToo DVD Ripper Platinum to rip the track that I want. I select the "iPod 320x240" setting, and then I use the Media program (In the Desktop Manager) that came with the 8830 to load the resulting file onto my 8830. ImTOO DVD Ripper - rip DVD to AVI, DivX, MPEG, VCD, DVD converter, and it's $45 :(, but it works great for me. I have also used it to in a similar fashion to put video on my Sandisk Sansa E260.

Also, just an FYI, if you do a seacrh in the media forum, there is a thread that is fairly lengthy but goes into great detail on how to put video on your Blackberry, and there is a small description of DVD videos. I have been doing this for years on both the Palm platform & PSP, and have found the Blackberry to be alot more sensitive about how the video is encoded.

Two nights ago, I ripped an episode of Hogan's Heros from a DVD using DVD Shrink (do a Google for this utility, it is no longer supported or enhanced due to legal issues, but you can still find mirrors out there). This gave me a VOB file (plus some other extraneous stuff). I then followed the directions in the thread I initially made reference to and it worked perfect the very first time.

My only complaint is that this seemed like a 10 step process, well, it was like 4 steps, and but each step took a long time. Granted, this was my first time through this specific process for the BB, but I probably had 90 minutes into this one 30 minute episode. I see where I can run some of this in a batch mode, but there *has* to be an easier way.

Try the suggestions others have had in this thread. But if all else fails, use that 8800 video thread in the Media forum and that will work as well, assuming you have some patience.

Good luck.

What did you do to make the movies full screen? I tried changing options on the demo without success.

If I could figure this out then I would buy this software.

While the video is playing, click the options button and check 'Full Screen'.
It takes a second for the full screen to occur, but that should do it!

Thanks fatbike.
I should have clarified. I'm using the ImToo demo. I tried ripping using all 4 screen options (letterbox, medium, pan and scan, full screen) without complete success.

My best results come with medium and full screen. I can't tell the difference between them, but they both leave an equal perimeter of blackness surrounding the image. I can't seem to get rid of the annoying, space-consuming perimeter!

I tried emailing the company regarding this same question. They got back to me within 12 hours with a completely useless suggestion (all they said is that I should try the demo).

Were you referring to ImToo or the other program mentioned in this thread with your response?

Using the latest version if the ImToo software (when did you download, they updated it recently), they have a built-in profile for Blackberry MP4. When ripping 4x3 television programs, they fill the blackberry screen. When ripping 16x9 movies, you'll have bands at the top and bottom which is normal. Are the bands you are seeing due to not having the 8830 set to full screen?

I just downloaded the software yesterday so I assume that its the latest version.
Are you saying that you have absolutely no vertical black bars to the left or right of the 16x9 movies using ImToo?
No matter what I do I cannot get ride of this wasted space.

You mentioned that I may not have my 8830 set to full screen. How did you set it to this?
Thanks in advance.

Right, only top and bottom bands. When you converted using ImToo, was the size set to 320x240?

To set to full screen, when playing a video, hit the menu button - there is an option for full screen which can be checked or not checked.

Thumbs up

AWESOME!
Thanks a lot. This has been driving me crazy for days. I didn't even think to look for additional options in that screen.

Encode to .AVI using DivX using whatever program you like.
Connect 8830 to PC Desktop Manager and start Media Manager.
Drag the .AVI file to Media Manager.
When prompted to Optimize, etc. - Choose Optimize.
Media Manager will convert .AVI to .MP4 to watch on 8830.
You probably can't watch the new .MP4 on your computer so save the .AVI for future reference.

Default MediaStudio Question...

I installed the MediaStudio for Blackberry Demo and everything works great. However, I only have about 200mb free on my C: drive. Is there a way to tell MediaStudio to store the converted videos in a different place other than a folder on the desktop (which defaults to being on C: )? I have already changed the setting for the temp area to be my D: drive.

Chris
