Default Sprint 8830 - To enable or not to enable that is the question

A colleague of mine has traveled to Australia and would like me to ship her a Sprint BB 8830.
Does anyone know if the phone first needs to be enabled on the Sprint network in order for the GSM to work down under? Or can she simply install a SIM from a local Aussie provider and have it work.

She should be able to install a card from a local aussie provider. From what I understand the 8830 is unlocked.

I heard from a Sprint exec that changing the sim card to a non-Sprint sim may disable the web/data capabilities.

It would depend on what kind of account and voice/data plan is on the sim. Most prepaid sim cards don't have BB data.
