Check your firewall: Options -> Security Options -> Firewall.
Ensure it is disabled and that BlackBerry Internet Service is not checked.
Since the leave a copy option was not originally checked, it does not sound like a message count issue. Also, if you are only looking to receive email through your verizon account, ensure the Desktop Service books are not installed. They can cause issues as well with preventing BIS email from pushing through if there is no need for Desktop (CMIME)
