Questions about 8820 and Wi-Fi from a n00b
I haven't done much reasearch on my question(s) and what very little I have done wasn't very helpful. It's been about 5 years since I've owned a BB (and not a day goes by that I don't miss it), so I've been thinking about buying an 8820 through ATT/Cingular when they come out. (Yes I am aware about the fiasco, but it won't stop me from buying one if it serves my needs)
I noticed at ATT they have a voice rate, a data rate, and a wifi rate. Not happy about a separate wifi rate but I am not sure how it works.
Can I be at home talking on my BB connected through my Wi-Fi network? If that's possible, does that mean my minutes won't be racking up? (If that's the case, I could justify going with a lower voice plan to offset the $19.99 Wi-Fi monthly charge)
Is there a good website that explains how the techology works to a n00b like me?
I am thinking after deciding I want 2100 minutes on a family plan that it would be quite costly.
$99 Voice + $39.99 Data + $19.99 Wi-Fi.
Thanks for your help in advance
Don't know what the rates are going to be yet as no US carrier has released a BB with wifi capabilities yet. TMo is releasing it later next month and AT&T is coming soon as well.
I have the 8820 on Orange in the UK. The wifi in the 8820 seems to be a standard wifi and works on my home network. I surf the internet using the 8820 browser with no problems. My contract with Orange does not deal with wifi at all. Is seems quite strange AT&T would have an extra charge for wifi usage. Could they be referring to a broadband connection? I somehow doubt they would charge you to use the built in wifi.
What I've heard is that you'll still need a standard BB data plan. Haven't heard if they will charge extra for the wifi capabilities.
Thanks for your thoughts guys. I appreciate.
Now I can't find that $19.99 fee again I thought I had already seen. Makes be feel better that there's at least 1 thing a carrier won't charge you extra for
I can NOT see AT&T charging any fee to be able to hook up to your WiFi at home or others places. I can see some of these WiFi portals charging you admission but this is on the degrease rather than increase.
As T-Mobile kindly puts it, you will pay extra for WiFi but, in turn, that can let you not to use at home your wireless voice/data plan minutes you already paid for. :)
I guess for heavy long distance users the phone over internet would be nice but I only make a few LD calls to family on the weekend and just do it over my phone for free. I just can't see having WiFi on my 8800 as a earth shattering feature. Doing the internet on my 8800 screen is not exactly rewarding. I do enjoy my WiFi system but with my Thinkpad T60p with it's SVGA+ 15" screen!
