7130c...first BB seems dumb for a smartphone.

I don't want to jump to conclusions, this is my first BB and I'm excited but it's proving to be kind of...well dumb

I first tried to shoot a file over to my BB device through apple's super convenient bluetooth file exchange....only to be told my 7130c doesn't support the necessary hardware... which is rediculous because it has bluetooth...wierd

Now I downloaded PocketMac which is the Mac equivalent of the dsektop manager and I don't have ANY options to put files on here manually. I can't browse my audio files (I am a music producer and I want to put one of my tracks as my ringtone) I am aware that I can upload it onto a server and download it through the internet...but holy crap what a monumental waste of time... this phone is supposed to be smart.

Am I missing something? It's cool that it automatically 'syncs' to ical and all that...but so have the last two phones that i've had (over 3 years now). I use a mac and I get the feeling that all these cool sync features are more of less 'cool' in the windows world where they're sort of common in the Mac world.

Please, educate me

bluetooth is, well, finicky on the BB. You purchased a device that is rather outdated as well. The media functions on the 7130c are quite limited. The 8100 Pearl, 8300 Curve, and the 8800 are the media machines and would probably do more of what you want. They come with microSD media card slots supporting up to 4Gb right now (since that's all that's available.) Does your 7130c have OS 4.2 on it? Check Options >About for your OS version.

:( that's not good news. I checked the version and it says Wireless Handheld (EDGE) v4.1.0.381 (platform 2.1.0.23)

What does all of that mean? I asssume it's not too easy to update change versions as desired all by my lonesome?

Thanks

and it may not be available for it either I know its not for the 7130e

4.2 is available for the 7130c. You can upgrade it yourself. Follow this link. Then follow the instructions exactly and in order and you can update it to 4.2. That will give you a little better media capability.

well can anybody point me in a direction where I can at least get some of my own ringtones on here without having to download them? Or getting a third party app that doesn't need the internet to look at a map. Or for god sakes unlock the bluetooth on here so I can accept things from my computer

DiRN 08-27-2007 07:28 PM

OS 4.1 doesn't accept file transfer, neither through USB nor through Bluetooth. If you want to be able to do so, you'll need OS 4.2. And without internet access, there's really no way to download a map.

John Clark 08-27-2007 07:30 PM

Yes, please follow the instructions in the link I left you above.
No more complaints until you get OS 4.2 installed. That is the best you can do. Once you have that and the latest Desktop Manager installed you'll be able to move small ringtones to the phone.

bobsbarricades 08-27-2007 09:10 PM

hahaha, yes sir :) I apologize, I somehow missed your post

One problem however.... I'm on a mac and I don't know how to follow those instructions without a PC....

:(

You can't upgrade the OS of your BlackBerry without Windows.
I would suggest asking a willing friend with a Windows PC to help you upgrade your OS. Can't be done on Mac OS X.

bobsbarricades 08-27-2007 09:39 PM

....sigh....

freakin world needs to realize how awesome macintosh computers are....

So after I update... I should be able to transfer files over with relative ease, but still won't be able to use the bluetooth feature to transfer files.

Oh well, it's still a good phone I guess. Quality is 'last generation' good which is fine. Eh, just wish the iPhone wasn't so freakin expensive. The plan is hard to beat really.

edit.. AND TO BOOT! just realized that my sync for my calendar shifted all my appointments up 3 hours! .... ok ... this is rediculous

John Clark 08-27-2007 09:53 PM

You may be able to get the bluetooth sync setup. However, you'll need to use Roxio Media manager included with Desktop Manager in order to transfer files to the BB. Bluetooth is much slower than just plugging it in and doing it. Keep in mind that there is a 2.86 Mb file size limit in what you can transfer to the device memory. You'll have to cut your mp3's down to less than that size. Also, it won't hold that many as it's only a 64Mb device and 1/2 of it is taken up with OS.

bobsbarricades 08-28-2007 02:44 PM

ok, well it looks like I've got everything worked out. I have to wait to update the software, but in the meantime would anybody happen to reccomend a note sync program? one they find to work flawlessly

bobsbarricades 08-29-2007 04:24 PM

I tried using stickies, and that works /after a fair amount of adjusting :) But I wanted to know if there was anyway to get sort of picture notes? Although I guess for that I still need 4.2

Oh goodie, another woe is me Mac thread.
Yes, one day the 93% of computer users not using Macs will figure it out.
Sigh...

I know, I love following the pack too....

I don't know how your read into a 'woe is me and my mac' thread. I hope your e-cool makes you feel better.

..thanks for the help by the way.....

I don't mean to be rude (back), but I'm just asking for advice.

bobsbarricades 09-03-2007 05:38 PM

ok - well I downloaded the files to update my desktop manager and it wouldn't update my phone. I couldn't even find a button or setting to activate the update of my phone to 4.2

I get a message that lets me know that I don't have a phone running 4.2...but nothing. I even followed the instructions here

Use BlackBerry Application Loader to install BlackBerry Device Software

and when I get to the part that should let me update, it's grayed out and tells me the software isn't on there to update it....but I've tried two different downloads. I hate this blackberry download site because i've followed links and ended up at two seperate files to download... ::shrugg::

any help is much appreciated :)
