Default Orange WiFi problems

Please Login to Remove!

I've just got a sparkling new 8820 on Orange, but (having come from an 8700 on freewheeling O2 where eveything is open) can't get BB maps, have to use snailWAP and - worst of all - the WiFi won't connect and Orange doesn't support it. I keep getting the error merssage 'security information does not match' when I try to join open networks.

The Blackberry technical site talks about setting up the security information as a step when setting up the network, but I'm not offered that option on the wifi setup menu. Can anyone help? Thanks

Simon

You can get BB Maps working on Orange. See:
How to get BBMaps to show on my Blackberry

Do you mean you can't get Wifi to work at all?

Thanks for the BB maps help. I'm on a Mac, so things are a little tricky. Yup, the WiFi just won't budge. I've tried it on a number of open hotspots and I just get the same error message.

I haven't had any problems at home using wifi with the 8820. But I haven't had the opportunity to try it at a free wifi hotspot yet. You might want to try it at a wifi location where you can check the details on the wifi router itself. Just a thought.

I am also using a Mac machine, but as Griffog has noted I use a WinXP virtual machine under the Mac (Parallels and VMware Fusion) to connect to the BB device.

I've got Parallels and Windows XP on order, so I'll have a go at the maps issue when these arrive. But it sounds like I'm on my own on the wifi issue. I think paying a visit to my local Orange shop may be in order as the Helpline won't help. Thanks for the suggestions though.

Default wifi orange uk 8820

Hi,

I can get the 8820 to connect to wifi and browse fine.

All other apps: midpssh, google maps, miniopera, im+ etc
insist on using the gprs connection no matter what i do and orange charge a fortune per Mb - apart from the fact wifi is generally faster.

Anyone got any suggestions or is it as I suspect that I need to wait for an os upgrade?

It seems all the major GPS apps (BB Maps, Google Maps, Orange Sat Nav) use GPRS only- or at least I haven't been able to get them to work with Wifi. I did find a navigation app that seems to work with Wifi - TrackMyJourney. ( TrackMyJourney ).

Push email will also work through Wifi.

I think that because the 8820 is relatively new very few applications take advantage of Wifi. Hopefully this will change over time.
