4.02 or newer will support EVDO. You also have to be in EVDO coverage, but that's pretty easy now. Also before you'll be able to connect to EVDO towers, you'll need your carrier to update the PRL. Just call them and ask for it.
On Verizon you just dial *22899 and it will automatically download the PRL. Sprint requires you to call customer service to get it.
(PRL means preferred roaming list)
