Default Funky LCD after getting wet

Please Login to Remove!

I got the phone after the unfortunate getting wet and not being taken apart immediately. When I got it, it was on, but the screen would not repaint itself and had a ton of garbage on it. I got it home, disassembled it with the help of this forum and noticed corrosion on the ribbon and connector on the main board. I disconnected them and sprayed them with contact cleaner and rubbed them. The screens are now more legible, but some sections have a difficult time repainting. The home screens icons are mostly bland too(I have a pearl and not sure what to expect with this one). It is cingular and my pearl is t mobile and I don't have another sim card to see if that changes anything. I was curious if there was a better way to clean the corrosion or anything else I could try.
I have been searching a ton on here, but have had a difficult time sifting through all of it, so please don't bash this newbie too bad.
Thanks,
Ron

If a phone is used while it's still wet, it will fry it. If the battery is removed until the device is completely dry, it will likely be fine. It sounds like yours is done. It's possible yours may be just due to corrosion on the ribbon strip cable but no way to tell without cleaning some more.

I changed the theme to none, there were pretty elaborate backgrounds and now with a white background, things are painting much better. I was able to see another 8700 today and it almost looks like this one is in a safe mode at the main screen. Brick paints and plays well... I was thinking about reloading the os? There isn't anything on it that is needed and it is a cingular phone, can I reload it to make it compatible with Tmobile? When it was apart, I didn't notice and other corrosion or anything else standing out.
Thanks for the reply!

Any OS is compatible with any carrier. The phone needs to be Sim unlocked in order to use with another carrier. The OS has nothing to do with it. It cant hurt to update to the latest OS though.

Are there any clean, easy ways to SIM unlock? I haven't searched it yet, so...
Thanks again!

Only the carrier that is branded on the device can unlock it for free. If you are not a customer of that carrier then they won't unlock it for you. I suggest gsmphonesource.com for unlocking. They are reasonable and reliable.

Thank you much John! If you are ever in Atlanta, let me know, I want to buy you a beer!

After wiping the bb clean and reloading the os, everything seems to be working properly and looks right.

I am going to do more homework on the +/- of the SIM unlocking, I am not in need of this phone, so...

Thanks again!
