Default 8830 Voice quality killing me ! Can this be on such an awesome device ?

Please Login to Remove!

Guys, I am so psyched to get this new phone. I was on the Q9m for a week and could not deal with the whole widnows disaster. I had to constantly manage applications and kill them and the battery even with the extended was horrid , about 1.5 hours of talk best case.

So I got the new 8830 yesterday and I love the OS very much.. The mail and test and overall feel is great. Lots of my friends have the Curve and I expected the voice quality to be at least as good as that.

It's aweful and I mean aweful. You can be anywhere where there is any noise. I was in the mall and called a friend on my Moto V9m and he could talk to me no problem. I called him on the 8830 and he could not wait to hang up. It picks up every sound around you and amplifies it.. This is really bad.

I did the software update as Verizon Suggested and the Voice quality is no better..

Is Rim going to fix this or is every 8830 going to end up back at Verizon ?

What a nice device with such a horrid problem. In a quiet environment it's decent but still not the voice quality of the Moto or Lg phones we have ?

Cmon Rim Fix this please !! Dont make us return it !!

tm,

have you tried a BT headset to see if your call quality is any better? I before I returned my 8830 (for other reasons) I let a co-worker of mine talk on my 8830 and the first thing she said was "wow this call is VERY clear, I am not used to that" and she is a AT&T customer. My call quality was great, even when talking to over 8830 users, it did have some background noise but was not overwhelming. Try using a Bluetooth headset and call the firend that couldn't wait to hang up and see if their experience is any better. The 8830 is a awesome device. If anything, exchange it for a new one to see if maybe this one had a oversensitive microphone.

According to RIM this should be fixed in the next OS release for this phone.

Perhaps it is a Verizon issue, but my 8830 is so far superior to a Samsung a900 that it is almost beyond description.

We now have 4 of these in our company and all of them are exactly the same. The mic picks up everything around and lets the caller on the other end hear it real loudly..

It's aweful for such a great device.

Bluetooth does certainly help but sometimes the bluetooth sensitivity is bad also, that is usually when we switch to the phone to keep the call nice and clear. on this phone it's not good in any area where there is any noise going on.

So basically if you use it at home it's ok.. Even driving or horrid, they hear everything , the radio even on low.. The Wipers etc..

I have read several of these posts and I am surprised. I have asked several people on the other end of my BB if they experience this and the answer is always the same; "If anything it sounds better than your old phone"
When I ask specifically about the background noise, again the answer is;
"If anything it sounds better than your old phone"

I am on Verizon as well. I wonder if it is a hardware issue?

Go into your phone call logs, hit the option key, go to enhanced audio, and make sure it is set to disabled.

Im with Bell and my friend also, we both have the 8830 and the same problem....
Turning enhanced audio on or off does nothing.
Guess we all have to wait for the new software..

I have a Verizon 8830 and have the same exact problem with the background noise. I'm on my third phone for unrelated reasons, but the background noise issue has been the same on all 3 phones.

I've also installed the firmware update and tried turning the enhanced audio option on or off and nothing seems to make a difference.

Could this be a "feature" of CDMA vs. GSM. I ask because I have the 8800 on T-Mobile and the call clarity and quallity is superb. Experts say CDMA has much better call quallity than GSM but this could be a case of the better system being too good and picking up the backbround sounds that the inferior GSM doesn't get. Any validity to this?

Did you guys check the thread earlier about disabling enhanced audio? I think that was a solution for many folks....zI know it didn't work for one member but he also upgraded. I know it was the solution for many people having issues with it picking everything around them but NOT them!

i doubt it, if both cdma and gsm have good signal etc, you cant tell the diffrence the side effects of gsm i dont like. else quality wise is the same, i cant say cdma is better over gsm or vice versa. if you call a land line from one or the other they cant tell if your using a cdma or gsm phone.

I actually tried enabling and disabling it both before and after updating the firmware and it had no noticable effect either time.....

^^^ Yeah, same here. And no, it's not a CDMA issue because I can hear stuff in the background (not as bad as on the 8830 though) from clients on GSM with 8100 models. They all suck on the pickup. RIM's algorithm for speech processing on the unit blows chuncks. My girl has a old school RAZR from VZW and I can't hear anything in the background. She could be at driving in the car and all I hear is her speech. There is absolutely no background noise whatsoever. Motorola just does a better job at properly cleaning up and filtering the noise then RIM's devices do. Let's hope they fix it for all of them, I hate getting a call from a client and having to explain to them that I'm really in the office with people speaking in the background rather then at a party. dubbuuteef

Any verification of this claim? When can we expect this fix - am willing to hold out for it, but not for say 3 months.

I wouldn't hold my breath too much since you're with Sprint. For some reason most people with this problem reported have the Verizon phone, but there really should be no difference. End of next month is the next release from VZW.
