8700C - Why Unlock?

Ok, I have searched and read ALOT and I still cannot find what unlocking does.
I have read that AT&T would most likely give me the unlock code but what are the obvious advantages?

Is it only to allow you to use another service, ie: International travel or going to another US service?

Thanks,

SteveEJ

Unlocking simply allows you to use your phone with other sim cards. That's it.

To further explain, you can use an unlocked GSM BB on any other GSM network, i.e. an ATT BB 8700c on the T-Mobile network. Or when traveling overseas, you can purchase a SIM cars from a local GSM provider and it shoudl work in the BB. You may not have full data service, but you should have voice.

Thanks folks..

No real need to unlock it if it was a Cingular BB and I am on Cingular network..

Thanks again..
