Default 8703e outperforms the 8830 in tethered modem download speeds

Please Login to Remove!

In side-by-side testing of the 8703e with the 8830, the 8830 appears to max out at about 800 kbps while the 8703e is able to attain 1.2 Mbps download speeds.

Anyone else with similar results?

Eh...
I'm getting my e-mail and internet stuff done lickety split with the 8830, and for a lot less than the price of a data card.
Actually it seems like I'm getting better speed out of the tethered 8830 since I upgraded the OS.

But that may just be me...

Perhaps after I examine the default modem configuration, radio stats and JVM process % utilization I will have a better idea.

Anyone know if the RIM radio "AT" command reference is publicly available?

Well boys and girls,

It took me a liitle time to determine that RIM's bluetooth implementation using CSR's BC04 chip was configured to run in UART mode at 460800 bps with even parity. No wonder DUN over bluetooth had always been painfully slow with the MSM6550-based products relative to DUN over USB.

Fortunately, I was able to tweak the UART to achieve better performance.

I'm also happy that the 8830 HAC upgrade recently attained FCC approval - (see L6ARBK40CG 12/22/08)

Bluetooth is obviously not the best route to go if you want good transmission speeds, which is why I always stick to USB.
