Default Syncing w/ Different Apps

Are the only programs that can sync Outlook, ACT!, Lotus Notes, and Lotus Organizer?
I'd like to keep my phone updated w/ my calendar events and such from my desktop program (MSN), but I'm not sure which programs are compatible. If those are the only ones, would anyone have a recommendation?
I'm thinking about starting to use Outlook for this purpose, but want to clarify any possibilities first.
