Question 8703e BBmaps Sprint and Enterprise Services

Please Login to Remove!

Please pardon me if I haven't searched thoroughly enough and provide me a link to an existing answer, if one exists.

I have the 8703e. It is linked to our corporate network, which has the BB browser totally locked down, for some bizarre reason that's held in secret (or they just can't come up with a good reason).

Anyway, I have BBmaps installed. When I turn on the GPS chip, the application gets a signal. It shows me the direction I'm going and speed. But the map is just diagonal lines. I live in the Dallas area, so I don't think it is because of lack of a map existing. I'm guessing it has something to do with the Enterprise Services locking down the browser, but that is just a guess. I was able to install Mini-Opera and I can use that to browse the internet.

I'd appreciate any help on settings I can use to enable the unit to display a map.

Thanks in advance,
Andrew

It sounds like your company locks down data. BBMaps doesn't work on TCP as Opera does. I think you're out of luck.

Question

Thanks for the quick reply.

I'm not sure that they have locked down all data, as I can use the "phone as modem" feature. But then again, that may be something totally different. I don't have a clue.

Do you think the Mapquest would work? I have looked at their offering. I can't download the jad file via Opera, as it triggers the BB browser which then doesn't do anything except give me a page error. I've downloaded the jad file to my laptop, but the BB desktop software doesn't load jad files. Am I out of luck here too?

Any other ideas?

I'm open to any suggestions for a low or no-cost solution. (TelNav, even if I could use it is too expensive.)

Thanks again,
Andrew

Phone as modem uses the TCP connection. Your company has the data you need locked down. I don't think you can force TCP in BBMaps. In TeleNav there is an option to force a TCP connection so you may be able to use it if you can find a copy to install via desktop manager.

Do you have a wap browser? Go to Options >Advanced Options >Browser. Under default Browser is there another browser besides the Blackberry Browser? If so, set the default to that. Then try downloading your applications again.

Thanks again. As you said, I think I'm out of luck, unless someone knows a way to force BBmaps to go via TCP.

I hate to do it, but I believe I'm going to have to raise the issue to a higher level. I travel for my work, have a GPS ready unit, and can't use it!

But thanks for the help. It's much appreciated and has saved me a lot of time that I would have spent checking this all out by trial and error.

Best regards,
Andrew

Question

I'm in the same bind with Google Maps - I can't download the app' from Mini-Opera because it closes and triggers the BB browser that is locked down.

Searches seem to show that I could load the app' via the desktop manager, but I can't find a copy of the alx file anywhere. The link on Google is broken (and apparently has been for some time).

If you know of a place where I could get the alx file then I'd give it a try.

Thanks again,
Andrew

Question

I found a hack for Google Maps here, under the answer, "Google maps .cod files. Found em!".

I downloaded the two cod files and created the alx file as instructed. The installed without a hitch. However, when I tried to connect I received a very specific message, "Network error. Your enterprise Blackberry server does not allow connections to the Google Maps service. See the Google Maps FAQ for more information: http://google.com/gmm/faq.html#28". No luck there.

I did find a post suggesting that I erase the BlackBerry and then install the Google apps. After that then request a new enterprise activation code. According to the post, the Google apps will continue to go through the provider and not the enterprise server. However, I've already had to request two new reactivation codes and I don't want to push my luck.

I have the Google Maps installed now. Any idea on how to get them to bypass the enterprise server?

Thanks,
Andrew
