Transferring Files

If files are "transferred" from a PC to a Playbook, are they actually physically on the Playbook or are they only being picked up by the network connection? In other words, can I take my Playbook away and still play the music or see the pictures etc.? I have read that you need the network which would be completely useless to me.

Anything you move from a PC (movies, music) stays on the Playbook.
