Default overkill on q10 charging?

Please Login to Remove!

i bought a couple of desktop charging stands for my q10, one for my office and another for a colleague. after a few days using one at the office, i liked it so well i decided to plug the second one in at home. traditionally i'll have my q10 (and a predecessor bold 9900) sit on office desktop charging stand all (or most of the ) day on days when i don't leave the office (much) and then i would not have it on a charger at home overnight

query... does anyone have opinions whether it would harm the battery if i charged the q10 every night at home while asleep even though it will be mostly full charge still by the time i get home and get ready to sleep? i remember hearing conflicting versions (with older batteries) about the importance (or not) of running the battery a good ways down before charging it back to full

any opinions / informed guesses appreciated. thx

You are definitely doing overkill. Even though the Lithium batteries do not have a memory, they still have a finite (though large) number of charge cycles, so every time it is connected to or removed from a charger a cycle is used. I charge every night regardless, and I won't charge at any other time unless I've used it excessively (my usual point is if it is below 50% at lunch), and I try not to ever let it go below 20%.

In my opinion, taking a mobile device from charger to charger defeats the purpose of having a mobile device.

thx dc/dc, i appreciate the advice. it sounds logical to me and i think i'll mimic by just leaving my q10 on belt/holster during each day, charging overnight each night at the house, and only using the office charger as backup in strange circumstances. thx again, bt

I leave my BlackBerry lithium battery devices charging all night long for past 5 years with no ill effects. 9700, 9800, 9810, 9860, Z10, Q10, PlayBook, HS500, HS700

my laptop is in a dock all day long and never had a lithium battery issue in past 8 years

I always have mine connected hen I am near a charger. From what battery engineers and others in the industry have told me, lithiums like to be kept topped off.

Plus letting them get below 20% on a consistent basis confirms the statement in the above article that it does more harm than good and aids in shortening battery life.

I believe there are things you can do that make a difference at the margins. But in the end you have to do what you have to do and deal with the consequences. So, do what you do and buy a new battery if and when you need to.

I generally top off the battery whenever possible and still charge when I sleep. Sometimes I run the battery down into the red. In all these years I've had one battery start failing on me. In all other cases I have handed my BlackBerry down to my wife with the original battery, and she has used it until the next hand me down.

One of the battery life metrics is number of charge cycles. A charge cycle is NOT every time you plug the device in. One charge cycle equals going from 0% to 100% charge capacity.

So....charging a battery that is at 50% is half a charge cycle. Do that twice and it is one charge cycle.

Waiting for the battery to go to 20% eats up almost one charge cycle - doing that repeatedly will shorten the lifespan of the battery by prematurely reaching the charge cycle limit.

Just thought I'd mention something...

I'd highly recommend the stand alone battery and a second charger... If you read the details specifically....

RIM says to let the batteries cool down after a full charging sesion before use for best results, if it's always charging (and working) how does it get rid of that excess heat.

Heat destroys mobile electronics over time initially( laptops ...etc...).

Additionally I have broken the mini/micro/and the latest one constantly uninserting and re-inserting.....

In my mind replacing a 30-40 battery every year or 6months beat's paying out of pocket for a new device or the new 150-200 warranty deductible

just food for thought.

To continue on this thread, I fully recharge on a daily basis at night and by midday the battery is dead. One of the techies at vodafone told me to charge when the system is off, I totally don't agree with that approach due to my usage.

I'm considering going away from blackberry due to this nonsense. Have to recharge practically every 5 to 6 hours... does not make sense for me!

you should not have to charge every 6 hours. mine can last 2 days with out using it

if you use it alot then battery life will go down

is possible an app or email account is syncing lots of data
