Default GPSed - Get more GPS functionality on your BlackbBerry - 12-29-2007, 10:24 AM

Let me introduce a new project from SHAPE Services called GPSed. GPSed is a location-based service for trip tracking from Blackberry devices.

What advantage can you take of GPSed?
You can enjoy many interesting functions, such as:
* record tracks of your trips anywhere on the Earth from your BlackBerry. Your tracks will be traced on Google Maps and stored in an online archive or in your BlackBerry.
* show to your friends the instant position on a map when you are traveling
* map digital photos precisely at a place they were taken. It doesn’t matter if the photos are captured with your Blackberry or another digital camera.

How to use?Step 1. Sign up to GPSed online service to get login and password at:
Register new account - Mobile GPS Tracking Service
It’s free and easy to use.

Step 2. Download GPSed Blackberry app.
You can download it over-the-air at: GPSed.com - GPS tracking from your mobile
or download it to your PC at Download GPSed mobile application - Mobile GPS Tracking Service and install it via cable.
GPSed BlackBerry application is absolutely free.

GPSed is fully compatible with Blackberry devices equipped with the internal GPS receivers (8130, 8310, 8800, 8820). GPSed is also compatible with 4.2 OS Blackberry devices that can connect to the external GPS receivers via Bluetooth.

You can find more information about GPSed at:
About - Mobile GPS Tracking Service

GPSed Blackberry app and Online Service are now on beta stage, so any feedback is welcome. Please post your feedback to this thread.

What's so different between this and the 3 other threads about GPSed that you've created?

Nothing . . . outside of them being in different sections of the forums, i.e. 8800 forum, 8300 forum, etc. IMHO seems to be overkill.

also odd that it only works with 4.2 while listing the 8130 which comes preinstalled with 4.3 OS.

When viewing my track, it shows on the map in metric - any way to change that to the Imperial/US system - that is miles?

FF2, you can change metric systems on your BlackBerry.
On the map the only way to display is Metric system.

I've decided to make public a track of today's cross-country ski trip - the descent. It was in the boonies about 70 miles east of Seattle. It was produced with my verizon 8830, the Freedom gps puck and gps-ed:

Works great on my 8130. I tried running both GPSed and Telenav concurrently this afternoon and they both worked well together.

Great application! This is, by far, the easiest way that I've found for me to track my milage for work.

Let me specify one more time that any user with BlackBerry OS 4.2 and higher can use GPSed mobile application.

Those users who have BlackBerry OS 4.2 and higher can connect to any external GPS receiver via Bluetooth and record tracks from the BlackBerry.

Those who have 8130, 8310, 8800, or 8820 just don't need an external GPS receiver, because these models have a build-in GPS receiver.
It's just makes it easier to record the track : )

downloading right now. Ill test it out!

EDIT: Hmmm, I somehow don't see anything in the ?"I am here" screen. just a red circle that says "You are here" on a light blue backround o_O Same with "Sat" view, I dont really see anything.

EDIT #2: I guess I did get it to work after playing with it for a while, it just somehow started workin and actually showed me a map, lol. Tracked something real quick too as a test, from some street to my house (and no, I didnt drive through the woods in the end, there is actually a street there now and stuff, haha).

Got a couple questions for ya though.

This feature:

Allow other users to view my current/last position

Will it only show the last "ending point" of a track, or is it somehow possible to keep this feature on at all times, so its always updated when people go to that link?

Hi,
I am using GPSed on a Blackberry 8310 and the internal GPS.

My question/problem is that, while sometimes this works fine, many times when i press "New track" or "Continue track" it says ...

"Fixing Position" then "Tracking"
then "Fixing Position" then again "Tracking" and so on .. and it does not record the track.

The "Duration" counter remains unchanged while "Fixing Position" and FOR SO LONG that out or a minute it may record only one second .. or even nothing most of the time.

I did go outside (coverage is not the issue here)
I did reinstall the application (more than once)
I did check Options-Adv. Applications-GPS and the gps is working fine, i did press "refresh" there and i have 6 to 10 satellites available (refresh only took 5 seconds) .. YET GPSed CANNOT RECORD ON A CONSTANT BASIS ..

sometimes it works great .. other times it does that "Fixing Position" for ever .. what the is going on ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
I really like this application (especially due to the option to upload the tracks on the web) .. but i have been having this issue for quite some time ..
Is there anything I can do ???

Thanks,
AP.

Yes, if you check the box "Allow other users to view my current/last position", providing others with the link http://gpsed.com/whereis/"Your ID" they will be able to see your current location at the moment.

Dear users,

Explore better usability of GPSed with the recent update.

We have improved, so don't wait any longer and update (v.0.9.58). Download GPSed mobile application | Mobile GPS Tracking Service
When recording a track you may easily pause and restart the current track or start a new one. If GPS receiver disconnects you may receive an alert and have it reconnect after a few seconds automatically.
Other technical fixes were made.

Stay tuned.

Maybe this is not the right place for these questions but....

Are you planning on making this a pay/commercial program? Will it remain free and you and your programmers are just being very generous?

Under "settings" > GPS filtering, what is the significance of the options:disabled, low, high? How do they affect the program?

Have you considered providing an opportunity to EDIT the tracks. On more than one occasion I have forgotten to STOP a track after a hike or ski trip and accidently include the AUTOMOBILE drive home. I would like to be able to ERASE/DELETE/Remove that "bad" data from my track. Thanks

This looks like a possible app. for my bike commute. However, I do have a question:

Will it let me plan a route using a past GPS log (not street maps because this would be bike trails) and then provide an estimated time-of-arrival?

Actually, I don't think you need DATA. You can record a Track and then convert it to gpx (a kind of generic format (garmin related, I think) and view that in some other applications.

If you want to display your track in the gps-ed online application, you have to UPLOAD which uses data.

You are not charged for Internet/Data Service when you are writing tracks.
If you would like to transfer tracks to gpsed.com from your BlackBerry, data charge will apply.
Alternatively you can transfer files to PC using Desktop Manager. Then please change the *.txt to *.gpsed. After that login to gpsed.com, select Upload Tracks and upload the files from the PC.

I really like the new interface alot. Roll the trackball hortizontally to change screens. The only observation I will make is that for the sports enthusiasts, some way to find total altitutude gain would be great. Skiers and bikers would love that.

Yup, on the last bike ride I would have liked to compare the odo reading with one from the gps - 3,000 hilly feet. But that's also a ride-readout that really would have benefited from being able to edit the track (a feature I've asked about) - two flat ferry rides falsely inflated the miles so the readout really was off.

Just grabbed the latest BUT what happened to the list of my OLDER tracks. I use to be able to see old tracks and view their properties.

Also, while scrolling to the right, I got an UNcaught java exception.

1. Cannot seem to store my username/password successfully. Had to continually retype that info whenever I stopped/restarted tracking plus when uploading. Very tedious and frustrating.

2. Track mileage shown is way off (higher) than mileage actually travelled by car.

3. Was unsuccessful in sending track info to gpsed through the menu. Even though it acknowledged that the info was sent, it did not get added to my account. Had to manually upload the file (stored on the media card) when I got back at home.

FF2, you can find your older tracks by following these steps:
If you saved your tracks to the device memory on your BlackBerry go to Applications -> Media -> then press the Menu button -> Select "Explore" -> Device Memory -> Home -> user
or if you saved your tracks to the Memory Card please follow Applications -> Media -> Menu button -> Select "Explore" -> Memory Card -> BlackBerry -> GPSed

Organman,
1. To save your login and password please go to GPSed -> press Menu button -> Settings -> Track's uploading -> Enter your login and password and press Menu -> Save.

2. I would recommend you to use the Filtering option. GPSed -> Settings -> Tracks -> Filtering. The "High" option is preferable. This will make the track mileage show correctly.

3. Please check the version you are using: GPSed -> Menu button -> About. The latest version is 0.962. If it is not the version you have please update at Download GPSed mobile application | Mobile GPS Tracking Service or at wap.gpsed.com

I guess I was not clear - in the prior version of gpsed, I could look over an older track and view its properties. Distance, etc. Using the Media, all I get is its name but none of its GPS properties.

I can't comment on 1 & 3, but I also experienced 2. I think you can select imperial units, but that only changes the actual units name, not what it is calculating in, ie it will say miles, but be measuring in km.

Default GPSed 0.962 - 05-29-2008, 02:28 PM

I'm using this on my 8830, using the internal GPS, and, on the whole, I am very impressed by it. I do have a couple of questions though;

I tried to put this on a couple of times during a golf game and for some reason or another the GPS connection drops. Is there some reason why it won't reconnect. Even exiting the software and restarting, then selecting continue track will often fail.

I don't see the 'allow others to see my location' option.
